Solid poops with just formula??

My preemie son (born at 26 weeks) is still not eating solids and is only drinking formula.  His twin is only eating a few purees now and then but the majority of his food is formula.  So my son N is pooping solids poops...like an adult poop.  Small solid poops.  My son E, is still pooping mushy poop especially when he eats purees, it's a bit thicker but not solid.  Has anyone experienced this?

The only difference in both of their diets is I've completely eliminated all breastmilk from their formula.  They weren't getting much to begin with maybe 1 oz bm to 6 oz formula every other bottle.  I can't see this being the factor to completely switch the texture of his poop and it only happening to one of them.

My pediatrician told me to give him pear juice to help with the constipation!!  He's not dehydrated b/c he always has wet diapers and I'm not sure it's just constipation.

Thoughts?

Re: Solid poops with just formula??

  • My DD is EBF and we still had problems with constipation. We give her 1/2 teaspoon of milk of magnesia twice a day. (But she's 10 months old when we started.) I would ask your pedi if/ how much you could give LO.

  • When I switched my DS from breast milk to formula (with just a few purees here and there) he got very constipated.  He was drinking Similac and per our pedi's suggestion, we switched to Gerber Good Start Gentle and that did the trick!
  • Could be the type or brand of formula. I was in a similar situation with my preemie. Wasn't producing enough milk and his poops were hard and solid when he went to just formula. He was on similac neosure and after trying similac gentle then gerber without any change I went to enfamil and he has had normal poops almost every day. I would just try switching and see what works.
