Btdt flat head

My LO has a slight flat spot on the back of his head. He's going to PT for his neck so he can turn it more easily. He's only 2 months so she says there is time to correct it as they don't fit helmets until 4 months. I can't seem to keep him off that side for sleeping. I've tried to put a blanket underneath to keep it slanted or cup it inside a blanket but he always squirms out. Does anyone have tips to help me? I really don't want him to get a helmet. I've heard most insurance companies don't even cover it because its considered cosmetic.

Re: Btdt flat head

  • We went thought this with ds1 and ds2 has a flat spot as well. Once they're holding their heads up more it will start to correct itself. We nearly helmeted ds1 because his was pretty bad but we never did. I personally wouldn't jump straight to thinking about a helmet again. Give it some time and reevaluate in a month or two.

  • What about sleeping though? He will spend most of his time on that spot. I have another 2 months until they start to talk about fitting him.
  • Did the doctor mention tortocollis? PT will help with that and it will allow for him to turn it more easily.
  • Yes he had that too. He's going to PT and I have been doing stretches for his neck. He's now got better movement when he turns his head to the left but still prefers to sleep with his head to the right. He does need more work on his neck though. I can tell because he gets upset a little when I'm stretching it. Hopefully that will help it!
  • No I haven't thought of that. I can ask the PT on Tuesday when we go.
  • DS had a bad flat spot that mostly corrected itself. Now his hair covers the slight flat spot. DS would turn his head to face my side of the bed when he was in the PnP so I put him in backwards so he would turn his head toward me and it would be the opposite side of his head. Does that make since? If your baby favors one side position him so he wants to turn it the other way. We did the blanket under his back to lean him the opposite way too. Give him as much tummy time as you can.
