Preemies

Normal pregnancy

Hi there, just curious if anyone had a normal pregnant but still had a preemie? My pregnancy was very uneventful. No preeclampsia or high bp or anything out of he norm yet at 34 weeks my water broke. There was no conclusion as to why it happened. Nothing was significantly wrong with me or the baby. I often find myself wondering though why it happened and worry about having a pre term baby again. Anyone else in the same boat?

Re: Normal pregnancy

  • I think about 75% of us here have no reason as to why/what happened. Sometimes are bodies just "know" it's time for baby to come out before anything happens. ....myself included in this.
Speak with your OB about future pregnancies. I am sure you will be high risk now and followed by an MFM. Goodluck to you.

  • Yup, I had a very uneventful pregnancy. I was working full time, wearing heels at 23 weeks and generally had very mild complaints. My water broke at 24 weeks without any explanation. It happens. I'm bitter about it but it happens.
  • Yep, I had no issues as well.. Went to the hospital at 33 weeks to get what I thought was "Braxton hicks" checked on and found out I was 3cm and fully effaced with 'bulging water' - meaning it was about to pop. I spent 4 days in labour before he finally made his appearance and they actually had to break my water when I was 8cm.
No known reason why the contractions started.. I feel like maybe I walked too much, maybe I should have gotten the BH checked out sooner, but I had no pain! Just was a little uncomfortable from them and only even went to the hospital because a coworker made me since I was supposed to be going away that weekend.
Anyway... Yep no reason, just happened. My OB said there is definitley an increased risk next time and I will be closely monitored.
  • Thanks everyone. I feel better knowing I'm not the only one!
  • Yep. I had no issues whatsoever until my water broke at 5 am one morning while I was sleeping. Although I have often wondered why or what happened, I have faith in His perfect timing. We are blessed to have been given a miracle.

  • Same here! I was 'leaking' for a couple of days, went to the do for twice...was sent home twice...just to go into labor in the middle of the night the next day. I delivered at exactly 29 weeks for no apparent reason. It drives me crazy not having a reason. I am trying to accept that I just won't ever know.

  • @lacijacques my water broke at 3:00 am when I was sleeping too! No reason or explanation given by doctors or everything that I've looked up about PProm. I think one of the difficult things about this whole thing is not knowing and wondering if/how it will affect the next pregnancy :( I've also beat myself up about taking a bath the night before (which was the only thing I hadn't done up to that point during the pregnancy). Again, there is no causal connection.
  • @Kvochka Yes, same here. We would really like to have one more but I'm concerned, for sure. I asked my doctor straight out if she thought we'd have any issues with another pregnancy and she said she didn't feel we would since there was really no medical reason why I went into labor early. I had a MC in July 2012 at 12 weeks and she was there through that too so I really wanted her input. It is difficult not knowing what caused both, and honestly the MC was harder for me, but we made it through!!!! And we will make it through whatever else comes our way. :-)

  • I had no issue up until the day I had my c/s at 34w4d when I developed Pre-E with HELLP Sydrome. Also, babies were IUGR. No real explanation. I wasn't even close to going into labour either (no dilation or effacement).

  • I had a completely normal textbook pregnancy and my water broke at 1:00am at 34w6d.  They tested my placenta afterward and said there was some inflammation, but no bacteria detected by the test.  So seems like in my case it was the start of an infection and my body got him out before he could catch it (his tests all came back negative).  It was a rough 2.5 weeks in the NICU, but I think everything happened for the best.  I was feeling guilty and blaming myself until they got the results on my placenta though.

  • Same here. I had been dx w mild pre-e, but it didn't progress and I felt fine. Then, completely unrelated, my water broke at 34w. Looking back, I can see the signs (irregular contrax, increase in discharge, slightly dilated/effaced), but those things happen in any pregnancy and don't automatically point to labor. Hindsight is always 20/20.

  • Same here! Had a check up on Thursday, water broke Sunday!
  • My pregnancy was totally normal all the way up until my 32 week appointment for a 3D ultrasound. Which never happened because DD had her arms crossed over her face lol. That's when they discovered I had low amniotic fluid. So I got to do full on bedrest and get steroid shots. Went to the hospital twice to try and build fluids back up when they finally did a c-section at 35 weeks. I didn't even go into labor or have my water break.

  • Water broke at 35 weeks and I had an SCH (bleeding), but that was at the beginning of my pregnancy and resolved on its own. I had a completely normal pregnancy after that. I do have an arcuate uterus, but my midwife said its very minor and didn't cause my water to break. They don't know why it broke. I want a lot of kids and I'm terrified and bitter that I have to worry about it. People with full term babies are blessed they don't have to worry like us.
