Placenta succenturiate lobe affecting fetus?

Just signed up to be able to see my chart online and I found this "Placenta succenturiate lobe affecting fetus".

Does anyone have any clue what this means? I am kinda freaking out right now. Why didn't my Dr mention this to me at my appointment today?

  • How did you sign up to see your chart online?
  • Loading the player...
  • I would call my dr in the morning and ask what that is, or if you should be worried.

They gave me a paper today at my visit telling me how to sign up. My chart doesn't have much in it.

The next time they are open is Monday. I was just hoping that maybe someone on here has the same thing and could explain it to me.

  • No experience but I agree with others that if it was something your doctor was concerned about he/she would have discussed it with you. I know it's tough not to worry but try to trust that your doctor will talk to you about any issues.
  • A succenturiate lobe is when the placenta has two connected portions. Usually there is just one flat round placenta with the cord attached right in the centre. When there is a succenturiate lobe it kind of looks like a second (usually smaller) placenta attached to the side of the first. I suppose that depending on where the cord attachment is it could affect the baby but I've never seen a problem with one.

Definitely call your doctor on Monday to ask what the true concern is. Good luck!

@Jenstwins Thank you for the response. I will be calling Monday to find out what is going on. Do you think I will require a C-Section?

  • Without knowing what the concern is re:babe I couldn't speculate on a section. However, I've seen succenturiate lobes from sections and vaginal deliveries, and have never seen one listed as the reason for a section…

  • I have a SL as well, my Dr sent me for an additional ultrasound to make sure it wasn't covering my cervix. No C-section required, they just need to know about it so they can make sure to deliver both parts of the placenta and not leave any behind. Call your Dr Monday tho to make sure yours is similar.
  • My friend was just telling me today she had an extra lobe on her placenta. It didn't cause any issues, she delivered vaginally, and the only thing they watched for was to make sure she delivered the entire placenta. Hope this and the previous posts have alleviated your concerns a bit. I agree, if it were a major issue I think your doctor would have brought it up. Let us know what they say on monday when you call.
  • Ditto what the last two ladies posted. I have an extra lobe as well and was told that they noted my chart to make sure whoever delivers checks that I passed both parts of the placenta.
