April 2013 Moms

Question from April 14 :)

Hello!

I'm debating purchasing a maternity coat. I'm due the end of April and live in NE Ohio. In your experience, are maternity coats really necessary? My DS was born in July so this is new territory for me!

Thank you in advance for your help!

Re: Question from April 14 :)

  • I got one on clearance and appreciated having it! I live in MN.

  • I wish I had one..I was never able to zipper or button anything but my husbands coat
  • Ohio here and I bought one. Try Old Navy.

  • I have a wool coat. I could button the top two buttons and tie it above the bump. It was not a maternity coat, but worked fine for me. I think whether you need a maternity coat depends on the type of winter coat you already have and whether you can make it work with the bump.

My sister just never buttoned or zippered her coat in the winter with her two kids (born Feb and Mar). She was warm enough just being hugely pregnant. :). I'd suggest waiting a bit to see if you really can't make your current coat work!

  • I live in MN too. I wore my regular coat all winter but never closed it. If I would have had extra money to spend at the time, I probably would have bought one.

  • I never bought one I just used my same coat.  It wouldn't button once I got full term but I was having hot flashes like crazy, so I liked the little breeze.  I also live in the south so it doesn't get as cold here.

  • I'd say it depends on the coat you have. I had a knee length coat that only had buttons to the bottom of the bust. There was a lot of space to grow in that coat, so I didn't need a new one.

     !
Ditto this or I would wear a bulky warm scarf and just tie the belt of the coat that wouldn't zip up.

  • It is going to depend on the coat you have now, how much you are outside, your body type, and how you are carrying.

My best friend had an April baby a few years back, and last year, I borrowed the coat she used from her. It was not a maternity coat, just a larger sized regular coat. She wore it unzipped most of the winter, as she has a short torso and carried low. I was able to zip it up my whole pregnancy as I have a tall torso, and was carrying high (and apparently didn't look pregnant in it as I surprised a few people when I started walking around with my baby a little while later. ;) ). We live in Canada and were both warm enough. However, my friend drove everywhere, whereas I walked a lot, so that may have made difference.

I would say, not a necessity, but you may be more comfortable in one depending on what you have now, and what a typical day is like for you. Good luck making your decision!

  • Another MN girl here and I bought one -- it was necessary for me!  I went with Liz Lange for Target and it is actually so cute I almost wore it the other day.  ;-)

  • I borrowed one from my sister and was really glad I did! I didn't gain crazy weight but I sure needed it! I was in DC during my pregnancy

This was me too. A coat that fits is worth it, I would not have regretted spending the cash on a maternity coat, even with the room in my regular coat I still ended up wearing my husbands coat near the end. Very classy in the workplace...
  • I live in Maine and yes i used a winter coat both times (both April babies). I got mine at old navy. I was a very heavy fleece/sherpa type coat and i just layered as needed.
  • I just wore an poncho sweater thing from the Gap and i was ok. I live in NY. I did gain 70 lbs though I was probably just hotter than normal.

  • I live in northern NJ and didn't get a winter coat. My mom is 2 sizes bigger than me, so I borrowed one of hers and it ended up being perfect. I also ended up fitting in my husband's XXL snow pants by March!

I never got one - just used the wool one I already owned and it worked fine. I live in ATL though and the coldest it got was probably in the 30s.

  • @sarahbeth27, check your PMs! I have a maternity coat I'd be glad to sell you for cheap! I also live in NE Ohio and it was a godsend last winter.

  • I also got mine from Old Navy. It wasn't terribly expensive. Bonus- I'm using it again this winter for walks and such while babywearing! It fits great over my ergo and woven wraps. I'd say go for it!

  • I usually just put a hoodie under my coat. I live in NE Indiana. I was fine all winter and went on a lot of walks with my pups and H. I didn't gain a ton of weight either people in my addition were shocked when they saw me with a baby too.
  • I got a regular pea coats size up from old navy, on clearance for $13 the day after Christmas. It only buttoned at the bust so there was plenty of room for my belly. It was a great buy!
