Christmas gifts for extended family

What kind of Christmas presents do you get for everyone? Do you pick out special, one of a kind gifts for everyone or do you get a theme going and get everyone something similar. In the past I've done a footprint snowman from DS foot dipped in paint in a frame, candles, smelly things for your house, that sort of thing. The people that get those are grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousins. What are some ideas? I can't think of anything and really need to get started!

Re: Christmas gifts for extended family

  • I'm very close to my aunts and uncles, since I have a small family. So we buy them "real" gifts.

  • We dont buy for extended family because well there is way to many of us. I have no idea what i would get everyone, but i would like to think that i would take the time to pick a gift for each of them.
  • with my extended family we all bring one gift and it is labeled with a number. then everyone draws a number and gets a gift. They are grouped between women, men, kids, and babies

  • We also don't buy for extended family because that would be a lot of money.  Like that would be almost 100 gifts to buy/make for people.  SO if we would buy for everyone, I would go to the dollar store and get the stuff there or I would do a picture collage thing and every single person would get the same gift.  I would probably feel bad every year, but if either family would decide to do gifts for all the extended family, then I wouldn't have a choice because we just don't have the money to spend on an extra 100 people at Christmas.

  • One side of my family we do play Dirty Santa, so we all bring one gift. But I have some aunts and uncles that we're not really that close to but I feel like we need to buy for. Any ideas for that sort of thing?

  • I get generic gifts for people that I am not close to. Grandparents I would give nicer gifts to than so, and aunt or uncle that I only see a few times a year. My go to gifts are food related. Canning some jam, cookies in a cute container, the mason jar filled with cookie making stuff, hot chocolate/tea/coffee set with mugs. That type of thing since it all adds up $$ otherwise and they don't care about what I give them that much anyway.

  • We don't buy for my extended family but we buy for every.damn.person on DH's mom's side. I spend 2 months nagging people for ideas of what their spouse and/or child may want and then do my best to buy something they will like.  Last year I did a cop out with all the young girls and put together identical gift baskets of smelly girly stuff.

And no I'm not bitter about Christmas with his family...

  • Does anyone else feel like why do adults need so many gifts?  I'd rather just have a dinner out with my siblings to catch up then get some crap I don't need.  My MIL gets us so much STUFF that we have no space for in our house.  Although she has good intentions it's like she's going for quantity over quality.  She doesn't need to spend any money on me.  In particular, don't guess what clothes I need, bc you'll guess wrong.

I feel like all the gifts and fun should be concentrated on the kids.

I completely agree.  DH's extended family used to do a name draw with a $100 spending limit per person, so $200 per couple.  That was on top of buying for all of the adults in his immediate family and all of his nieces, nephews and young cousins.  It was insane.  Last year I bitched to DH every day until we decided to say we would not participate in the name draw for 2013.  In the end everyone agreed to drop it to a $30 limit but I still think it's dumb.

  • We just buy gifts for the kids--my cousin's kids and his cousin's kids. Usually DH's aunts and uncles we give a bottle of wine too.

Common gifts between the cousins on his side are lottery tickets, or homemade alcohol, etc.

    That sounds perfect to me!
  • I only buy for siblings, DH's parents, my aunt, and a couple close friends. Oh, and DD this year. I also buy gifts for everyone who I will see on the day of Christmas, so at most it is an additional 4 adults and 2 children. I usually get them little things, about $10 each. I just want to make sure everyone has something to open when we get together.

  • By extended family, we are talking about aunts, uncles, various cousins? That is a lot of extra people my dad is one of 5 that are still alive, all are married, have had kids and their kids have had kids. My mom is one of 5, all are married and have kids.

I still buy for my parents, brother, husband, child, MIL, FIL, BIL, SIL and their baby. I enjoy buying for them

  • The kids' cousins (my nieces/nephew) get something.  There are only 6 total.  This year the 5 girls get bracelets and the boy a board game.  Grandparents get homemade handprint ornaments. Nothing for anyone else.

  • We do presents for my parents, MIL, FIL AND step MIl. We also do one SIL and my grandmother.
  • Ok, I think I'm doing hand print ornaments for pretty much everyone. It's not that I don't like buying people gifts, if we had a money tree I would be all about it. Unfortunately, that is not the case. It will be affordable but meaningful. I would appreciate it if I received it as a gift.

  • We get gifts for nephews and nieces, but not really for our siblings anymore. This year I'm giving my SILs and MIL wooden cutting boards my uncle made, but usually it's coffee or homemade treats DH and I make. No idea what I'll get my siblings!
