Help! How can I relieve my nips?!

Sooo. I am only about 3 weeks into this BFing journey, and due to the fact that DD was low weight after her first post hospital check up I have been having to BF and then pump right after this whole time. I made it this far, and she is back to birth weight so I can stop pumping so often, but as a result of doing this for a couple weeks my nips are cracking, red and painful. OUCH! I think the news that I can cut back on pumping came JUST in time. The pain from latching and pumping was becoming too much.

ANYWAY. What can I do to ease the discomfort of my nips in between feedings to get them healed? I am using lanolin, but thats all.

Suggestions please!!

TIA!

  • nipple cream and soothie gel pads. And when you put the nipple cream on, SLATHER it on. It helps.

Also, you can do neosporin, just make sure you rinse your nips off before BFing or pumping.

  • The only thing that helped me was time.  My nipples just had to get used to doing their new job.  Hang in there, sore nips are no fun but it does get better.

  • My LC said salt water.  Mix salt with warm water and soak in towel.  Leave the towel on your nipples for about 10 minutes.  It helped me.
  • I used Bag Balm.  Its a lot like Lanolin but my OB claims it works better.  You have to wipe it off before you feed your baby though!  Like Iris said it gets a lot better with time.
  • try the hydrogel pads (my target has them). the cold felt good.
  • I like the Motherlove Nipple Cream a lot better than the Lansinoh Lanolin. It is smoother and easier to put on and you don't have to wash it off before nursing. You can find it at Whole Foods. I wish I had known about it from the start - I only started using it about 2 months in and I love it!

  • ditto the gel pads!  i had to wear the nipple shields for awhile b/c mine were so bad.  as soon as they healed, i was good to go and it never happened again.
