Babies: 9 - 12 Months

bath time

DS is 10 months old, and about 2 months ago we switched him from his infant bathtub to the shower bathtub. He loved it, would splash, play with bubbles, crawl around. But here within the last 2-3 weeks he is HATING bath time. He screams, cries, and just throws a fit whenever he sees the tub. I thought maybe the idea of the tub was overwheelming to him so we started giving him a bath back in the sink like we did when he was little, but still ended up with the same reaction. I know it's probably just a phase he's going through, but just wanted to know if any of you other mom's have had to deal with this, and what did you do to make bath time a little more enjoyable.

Thanks!

  • That's a great idea! I'm going to try that tonight:)
I've heard of the laundry basket idea but didn't know if it actually "worked"

    Thanks!
  • DD still loves her bath, I just get in the tub with her. Of course there's no way I can keep her seated, she just jumps up and down all over the tub and crawls all over me, but she loves it

  • We had that issue with DD a couple months ago. We moved her bathtime about 30 minutes earlier and she went back to enjoying it. I think she was just too tired for some reason then even though it was the same time we had always given her a bath. It coincided with when she started to get more mobile so I think she was just wearing herself out. Also, we put her in a laundry basket in the bathtub to keep it a little more manageable/less overwhelming. Its really hard to keep her seated, so the laundry basket provide soft sides and a limited area for her toys to drift from her....
we tried moving his bath time up a hour last night, and he was back to normal! didn't cry or throw a fit at all!
    thanks for your advice!

I never thought about getting in the tub with him before, that's a good idea! Thanks :)
  • No advice, but DS has gone from loving to hating baths too. Time of day doesn't seem to matter. I hope it's a short-lived phase for both of us!

  • Same thing happened with us, but at his 9 month check-up the doc told us to stop bathing him everyday now that it is winter (he had some eczema patches) and try to limit to twice a week (sponge bathe in between if necessary). After 5 day bath break (during that time, he had a swim lesson which ends with us in the pool shower and a quick soap, so we could go that long), he suddenly didn't mind baths again. I don't know if he forgot why he hated them after taking a break or what, but back to splashing and playing!
