Vaccinations for baby

Alright, I don't mean to open a can of worms here - I know this can be a controversial topic.
If you are getting child vaccinations, are you going for the hep B after delivery or holding off for a couple of months?
Also, are you deviating from the recommended vaccination schedule on anything else? If so, why?
Thank you!

  • I'm going to just be going for the normal course of vaccinations so 2 months, 3 months, 4 months, 1 year, 3 years and then the ones they have as teens. Don't really see the point in messing with the schedule as long as they all get done.
  • Why are you curious?
  • What do you mean trolling for random comments? There is a specific question and a follow up question on any other deviations from the schedule. Both of these questions relate to GETTING vaccines, not rejecting them.

There's no need to get defensive, I asked only for clarification on your position. As you noted, this is a controversial topic and can lead to misunderstandings and arguments, which we've had many times here.

  • We will be delaying the Hep B vaccine.  There is zero chance that LO will contract it so I just don't see the need for them to endure the vaccine so soon after birth.  We will be working with our Dr. for an alternate time table.  We will follow the standard time table for all other vacs...

According to the CDC Hep B is contracted the following ways:

At birth from their infected mother. From bites from an infected person.By touching open cuts or sores of an infected person.Through sharing toothbrushes or other personal items used by an infected person. From food that was chewed (for a baby) by an infected person. From ear piercing needles that were not cleaned well.

  • Why is it so odd to be curious and ask questions about this? If somebody doesn't want to answer don't answer. I've done research on the topic but would like to know why people choose to deviate from the schedule such as spacing things out more.
  • I haven't seen those posts. I will search for them. I'm more curious about the hep B given after birth not vacs in general.

Maybe the fact that we've had 20 discussions on the subject and they've all ended badly.

  • Well since both of my questions related to GETTING vacs I thought it was obvious that my stance was GETTING vacs.

If you aren't going to be helpful in answering my questions and instead question my motives please don't comment. I'm trying to learn more about this topic. Simple. As. That. Thank you to everybody that has been helpful in providing info on their decisions and reasoning behind it.

  • I wasn't around for those discussions and I'm more interested in the hep B after birth not arguing for or against vacs.

Not to sound mean, but why didn't you just say that in the first place? The thread title makes it look as if you're meaning vaccinations in general, as does the first post.

To answer, Hep B will be while we're still in the hospital, and as for the rest, it'll be on the schedule for the most part, only off if they're out of something for some reason, which I don't anticipate, but you never know. Things happen.

  • Yeah. Not even starting with this.

It most certainly was not obvious.

My first question was about hep B. I can see now how the title can give the idea of a general vacs discussion. It's the title though. Not the question. I'd hope people actually read the specific question before commenting.
Thank you for your help in answering my question.

    1. Please use the quote button if you're referencing a specific post.

    2. Anybody can comment on anything they want on a public internet forum. You put the question out there, be prepared for responses you might not like.

Oh thanks! I was hitting reply under the specific post instead of quote.

I know anybody may comment on anything on the internet. I just don't see the point in posting something that isn't helpful to the poster. If I don't like a post online or if I have reservations about the question I move on. Nobody has to post. If this topic makes anybody uneasy they don't have to read it or post anything. I'm just trying to gather info. That's all. I thought my birth club members tried to help each other out by being a source of information. That's what I'm trying to tap into here. I'm not here to argue. I had a specific question on hep b after birth. Then added a follow up question.

Thank you. I've looked. I know what the medical field states. I'm wondering what moms with children of all ages do.
  • Hi! I am waiting for vaccinations :) and separating most of them months or years apart! Good question. :)

Not really a good question. She claimed she was only asking about Hep B and yet in her OP asked if anyone was deviating from the recommended vac schedule in general. That is a very open ended can of worm opening question if I've ever seen one

Are you saying moms are smarter than drs?  or are you looking for moms to support your decision to go against the drs?

In some cases moms may be smarter than drs. I don't think anybody should blindly follow a dr just because they are a dr. That's why you act as your own medical advocate and educate yourself. Sometimes this includes asking others' stances to get a feel for alternatives and what's going on in the real world.
I'm not trying to go against the drs. I'm asking if people are waiting on hep b or other vacs and their reasoning for it.
  • Did someone say food post??

  • I didn't even realize refusing hep b was a thing until the bump. I just don't understand why you wouldn't.

I'm not sure why. Some people say because the baby's immunity is not as strong as later on so they wait two months. ? That's why I thought I'd ask. lol
  • We are getting them on schedule. Hep B being only contracted by sex and needles is a misnomer; they can get it from other sources as well and more babies are kids are being diagnosed with it which is why it's recommended do young.

But yea there are a hundred other vaccination posts you can look through as well. Lengthy ones.

You know they're already separated by months right? It's just when you take LO for her monthly check ups. They don't just give babies all the shots at once and you're done.
I'm aware of this. That's where the follow up question about other deviations in the schedule come in. Waiting will push the other hep b dosages back of course. I was curious if this caused parents to wait on other vacs.
  • Why do you care what a bunch of internet strangers are doing with their children? Why don't you ask your pediatrician what (s)he thinks?

Because I'm pregnant with my first (so I have no previous experience)and I can't choose a pediatrician until after birth. I have spoken to pediatricians but they don't seem to go too in depth with non-patients. Also part of doing research in acting as one's own medical advocate is finding out what is going on in the real world. The medical community says get hep b after birth and parents sometimes wait - my question is why are they waiting. To find out you have to ask people even if they are strangers.

Thank you for your post! Do you mind sharing why?
  • We're skipping hep B. it's contracted via dirty needles and sex so I'm pretty sure a newborn doesn't need it.
When my Ob brought this up to us my DH's reaction was "Don't you get Hep B from sex or doing drugs?I don't think we plan on taking her to any raves or anything until she is a little older so I think we will skip it."
