Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Weaning away from the bottle

I have already introduced Quentin to the sippy cup, but I only put water or juice in it. I was told putting formula in a sippy is a no-no. So...how exactly do you wean a baby away from a bottle if all he drinks in his bottle is formula?

Re: Weaning away from the bottle

  • Are you trying to wean him now??? If so, why so early?

  • At nine months we will start giving her whole milk at meals in her sippy and take away a bottle of formula a day.  10 months we will take away another and so on.  By the time she is 12 months, she will be down to only one bottle of formula a day.  Then we will cut that one too.

  • If he is still drinking formula why would you wean him from the bottle?

  • I think you just cut down on the # of bottles you give slowly and replacing them with solids.

It was my understanding that whole milk was not recommended until a year? Or am I misinformed?

    Yeah what she said.

And hey Katey, did you ever ask your mom about making hats to sell?

This makes sense. Thank you! Right now, he eats 3 meals a day of all solids with juice/water mix of a small formula bottle to wash it down. He has a large formula bottle at night and early in the morning.

Reason why I'm trying to wean him now is I don't want him to get too attached to a bottle. I want to slowly move him from bottle to sippy and drop the bottle?completely?by 12 months. I see a lot of big toddlers toting around bottles, and I don't want Quentin to fall into that groove.?

At less then 8 months, he should be getting more then two bottles a day.... Just my thought...

And i am going to be checking with the doc on the milk thing... my SIL's did it that way, so I will have to see.

  • When I hear "weaning from the bottle", I think of overal weaning. As in, no more formula at all. I never took it literally and I think I should've!! lol

Sorry, I have no idea ;(

He gets two (sometimes 3 if we are out and about away from solids) full 7 oz bottles a day, plus 2 small 3 oz bottles, plus lots of solids. Pedi said this was perfectly fine and normal. ?

  • My ped just told me today at my DD 9 month appointment that I can start giving her formula in a sippy if we want to.  We will start her on whole milk at 11 months.  What I have always heard is to not put whole milk in the bottle but have not heard anything about putting formula in the sippy.  With my older DD, I had only given her water in the sippy until we started her on whole milk and she made the switch off the bottle with no problem.  As we took away the bottle, we stopped the formula.  Not sure if I will try to give my 9 month old formula in a sippy or just stick to the bottles until 11 months.  She does drink water out of the sippy already and does great and daycare gives her formula in a sippy with her afternoon snack and she does OK with that.  I honestly think just switching off formula and bottles cold turker works best.

  • i was told formula is okay in the sippy. we also plan to wean away from the bottle by 1 year, which i thought was pretty common.
  • Why wouldn't formula be ok in a sippy cup?

  • My pediatrician said formula in a sippy cup was perfectly fine, and may help her wean off of the bottle faster (not that we're in that big of a hurry anyway).

What I really don't understand is giving them whole milk before age 1.  Everything I've read says that this is not a good idea, and researching it I've found that it's not a good idea for several reasons:

    1) Waiting to give fresh milk to your baby may prevent or lessen a cow's-milk allergy. About 2 percent to 3 percent of infants will develop some or all of the following allergic symptoms when they drink cow's milk: a red bumpy rash, a runny or stuffy nose, coughing, wheezing, constipation or diarrhea. Bywaiting a  year to give fresh cow's milk to your baby, it is possible that you are giving him a chance to build up his immune system, which may decrease the likelihood of a serious allergic reaction once he does drink fresh cow's milk.

    2) By giving your baby fresh cow's milk before 1 year of age, you may increase his chances of developing iron-deficiency anemia (a low number of red blood cells). Iron deficiency in infants can harm brain and nerve development, and can happen for several reasons:

Fresh cow's milk has less iron than breast milk or iron-fortified formulas.

The composition of fresh cow's milk -- calcium, phosphate and vitamin C -- can cause a decrease in the absorption of iron in a baby's intestine.

Fresh cow's milk can cause slight intestinal bleeding. This bleeding cannot be seen with the naked eye, but can be enough to make your baby anemic. Some studies have shown that around one-third of children who are regularly given fresh cow's milk before 12 months of age will be anemic before they are 12- to 15-months old.

and 3) you run the risk of dehydration - the high amount of sodium in fresh cow's milk compared to formula or breast milk can draw water out of your baby's body. If your child already has diarrhea or vomiting from a stomach flu or other problem, fresh cow's milk might cause or worsen dehydration.

I would DEFINITELY DEFINITELY talk to your pediatrician before starting whole milk, not just base your decision on what someone else did or is going to do.

  • He's 7 months old. YOu aren't going to have a 3 year old addicted to a bottle because he isn't weaned at 7 months old.

I find that a bit nuts. He needs formula until he's 12 months old so let him have a bottle that long if he needs it.

  • I agree with Lanie. Let him be a baby...everyone is in such a rush for their kids to grow up.?

I plan to still give him formula until age 1; that's not the issue. The issue is I want to break him of the bottle soon. I was told by his pedi it can take months and months to get them use to drinking from a sippy with no bottle in hand. So--just trying to get an early start. He'll be 8mo old on Wednesday, so why not?

8 months is perfecting acceptable to still be on a bottle.  The more you give the sippy, the better.

And Creamy (i think it was your), I am of course only going to give my DD whole milk after I get the approval from my doctor.

  • Introducing a sippy is fine, but I don't get the 8 month rush to get him off the bottle.

That's really truly nutty to me. He's 7 months old.

You are awesome. Thank you for trying to re-explain to these people. I'm not torturing my child, just trying to get him away from the bottle. Exactly, right!
