  • I wish LO would take a pacifier sometimes. If he did take one, I think I would limit it to the crib starting around a year.

My 2 year old still uses his at night and nap time. We weaned him off day time use before he was 1 and he probably used it for long car rides until he was about 1 1/2- 2. It will be gone before his third bday. He told me he's "giving it to Santa"... his idea. I probably would've weaned him earlier but we had a baby, moved, he switched to a big boy bed and is now potty training. Only one change at a time for him works best. I think its different for every kid. I didn't want it hindering his speech so I stopped day time use when I did.

Oh and DD never used one. She spits it out like its posionous.

This. I'm always jealous when I see babies happily sucking on a paci - can't take their thumb away.

  • My LO could take it or leave it.
A friend had the kid keep in their pocket for awhile until he was ready to get rid of it. Just knowing he had it was enough for him.

  • My LO had a cold about a month ago and didn't want a paci then because he couldn't breathe with it in his mouth. Since then, he has rejected all attempts to give him one. I was planning on weaning him around one, but I think we're done!
  • I'd say take it away when they seem ready, but take it away when they are like 2-3 years old. Luckily Connor just stopped taking the pacifier one day and he doesn't suck his thumb.

  • Our LO only uses one for sleeping.  We discourage it's use during waking hours so he can talk and explore things with his mouth.  Luckily he doesn't seem to notice it's not around while until he's sleepy.

My 3 yo still uses her pacifier at night. She's down to one, and she's been told multiple times that when that one breaks (or she bites through it), then it's gone. She's finally going to sleep on her own and sttn most nights, so I'm not ready to mess with anything.

My 7 yo stopped taking a pacifier at 4 months when she started sucking her thumb, and she still sucks her thumb at night. That I can't take away, so I think the pacifier is the lesser of the two evils.

All of the kids in Tallulah's class are the same age...when they all hit the 6 month mark (about 3 weeks ago) they posted a sign on the door to please refrain from bringing any and all pacifiers to school from the next day on.  They also asked us to go cold turkey at home with no paci. It was tough for about 3 days and then she just completely lost interest in the paci and she is a much happier baby.  She relaxes herself rather than needing something to relax her.  love it.
I think this is ridiculous (the school, not you). 6 months old is still a baby, and they still need soothing when mom and dad are gone. DD3 doesn't like the pacifier much anyway, but she needs it for sleeping still.

  • We are weaning during the day...she gets it to sleep or in her car seat during the commute.  But I'm not ready to try taking it away for sleep yet.  It comforts her.

  • Paige took one for about 2 months then has zero interest in them. ( I wish she did sometimes!!) Two co-workers told me they broke their babies at 1 year by cutting the tip off, caused them to loose interest, guess because it didn't make a 'suction'? Just passing it along since i don't have any of my own advice! :)
  • I'm not quite sure when I plan to wean him. But I have already weaned him off the pacifier during the day. I plan on letting him keep it at sleep times for a while still.

  • I had a pacifier until I was like. 5... and my parents turned it into a Christmas ornament probably to get a laugh out of how obsessed I was! Anyway long story short I turned out just fine! Warner just uses his for nap time but otherwise never touches it

I'm up to the only at night and nap.  The thing is his security blanket so to speak.  He's very attached.  We just got rid of one because it was ripped.  My DH ripped off the whole tip to keep him from using it or it doing so on it own where he could choke, and threw it in his trash in his room.  DS was sitting there with one of the remaining binkies in his mouth cradling the broken one and telling daddy he couldn't go to daycare that day because his binky was broken.  So cute and sad at the same time.  he has since thrown it out in the real trash and it's gone, but he still tells me his blue binky is broken.  I think we're just going to let them die one at a time until they are all gone.  There are 3 left.

The girls have theirs, but aren;t nearly as attached.  They are both thumb suckers much to my dismay.

  • I voted one year. I don't really know, though. He only gets it to sleep. I would say about a third of the time he spits it out and sleeps just fine. We will feel it out. I think a maximum of a year for us. It does help with his teething, though, so we will see.

  • I was similar to @Lhyacinth888 and @kgs0505. We were down to naps and bedtime when DS turned 2 and then we just let them die one at a time. A couple fell in the toilet while potty training so he knew he had to throw those away. And then one broke and we made him put that one in the garbage too for "the man" to pick up. He stopped having one all together this past August, 3 mos after his 2nd birthday. His last one was ripped and when he wasn't looking I tore the nipple off and set it back where it was. It happened to be next to his sippy cup and he blamed the sippy cup for breaking his sucky. Sooooo he threw away his sippy cup too. Whatever works.

I thought it was too.  and I was little mad about it but she has some of the best teachers in the school and I trust their judgement.  There are 6 kids in her class and they were all paci free by the end of the week.  I was really impressed.  They are also really hardcore about potty training.  I would be upset about it if it didnt work out well...but it did.  For that I am really happy!

I'm glad for you that it all worked out well, but I don't think I could send my child to that school. That's great that they're good teachers, but they're not the parent. I would not want my kid's daycare teacher making parenting decisions for me, and to me, that's a parenting decision.
