Swallowing food

I have been trying to give DD more "real" food instead of purees all the time. She'll often get pieces of banana for breakfast, and whatever we're having for supper if it's appropriate for her. However, a lot of the time she'll just cram her mouth full before she swallows what's already in there, and then she just ends up with a mouth full of food that takes her forever to swallow! Last night I gave her corn and some shredded chicken. She looked like a little chipmunk with her mouth full of food.

She loves puffs, but now I'm worried that since they dissolve/mash up easily, she's not learning how to chew her food properly. I'm also worried that there might be a greater risk of choking with all that food in her mouth at one time. Do any of your LO's do this?

Re: Swallowing food

  • If I give DS everything I make for him at once, he just keeps shoving it in with no regard for how much he already has in his mouth, or even if it's making it in there lol. So now what I've started doing is giving smaller portions at a time and I don't add anymore on the tray until he is done with what he has. I am home alone at night, though, so there is no reasonable time frame to adhere to for supper. And I am also not eating then, so I'm not trying to eat a hot meal at the same time.

  • DS used to shove a ton of food in his mouth and I was always on edge, with my finger ready to swipe. Then one night he threw up after shoving half a banana in his mouth. And now he's a very careful eater. He still gets all chipmunk-cheeky sometimes, but he seems to have figured out how to handle food in his mouth really well.

I'd say just give it time, let her explore, be ready with your finger to swipe if need be. Allow her to make mistakes and learn from them!
  • I usually just give DS one piece of food on his tray at a time so that he learns to pace himself. I'm sure he would do the same thing if he had the opportunity!

  • Audra double fists. She will have both hands full. and she stuffs her face full. she paces herself though, and has become quite the little champion eater. Her new favorite is barbeque shredded chicken and potato casserole. It takes her awhile, but I'm all for her exploring new foods.
