Low Placenta

So last night I had to go to the ER.. I have had a lot of trouble keeping food and fluids down, and have been having menstrual like cramps... I'm 20 weeks and this concerned me.. So after too many tests it's concluded that my placenta is very low near my cervix... The residents didn't seem concerned but they also didn't seem too knowledgable... They said I would most likely have to have a C section.. Anyone else have this??

Re: Low Placenta

  • You can do a search for this on the board. There have been quite a few posts on it.

There is a chance that as the baby grows your placenta can move up. If your placenta isn't actually covering your cervix then I am not sure why they said you would need c-section though.

  • Quite a few girls, including myself, are experiencing a low placenta or placenta previa. There is a chance for c-section if the placenta doesn't move up as the baby grows, as PP said, but it's not absolute and should resolve. There's also a discussion on the high risk board, most women have a resolution by 28-32 weeks. My doc told me no sex or heavy lifting and also wasn't too concerned, but I have another u/s in 6 weeks to check the progress! Sorry about the cramps, though, that's stinky. :(

  • Yes I got this info at my 20 week and OB is going to keep watch on it. But I haven't seen any side effects like nausea? Did they say that was the reason why you were getting sick.

  • Mine was low at 12w. I will have it checked at my AS on Monday. My doc wasn't concerned she said it will move up as the baby grows. The biggest thing is pelvic rest so no sex or Os and that can cause it to shift.

  • I have a complete placenta previa. I have also been put on pelvic rest with no lifting or exercise. The dr said it might move so there is hope to avoid a c-section. I haven't experienced any of your symptoms. The nausea one seems to be a little weird. Have you called your ob doctor?

  • @maryKay12 no it ended up not being pregnancy related... I have a good old stomach bug. They will do another scan on Wednesday at my scheduled anatomy scan.. So I'll know more then. Talking to you ladies is helping already though :)
  • I had partial placenta previa with DD. They did another ultrasound at 28 weeks and it had moved up. I was able to have a vaginal delivery.
