Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Still has startle reflex

Why does my almost 6.5 month old still have the startle reflex?? This can't be normal. He startles when falling asleep sometimes or while I'm putting him down.

In other news, so far tonight the zipadee-zip is not working for us :(

Re: Still has startle reflex

  • It sure what Startle Reflux is. I met a GI dr today with my LO regarding her spit up. She's a happy any and there's no problem with her but she just spits up a lot. WhAt have you tried?

    Reflex not reflux

  • He's 6.5 months and too used to being wrapped so tightly to the point where the slightest startle wakes him up. Once he is not swaddled, he'll get over it and the startle reflex subsides to the point of not waking him up.

As previous people (including myself) suggested in your other post regarding swaddling, going cold turkey on this is your best bet. It'll be 1-2 rough nights but he'll learn quickly. I don't mean to sound snarky or rude at all but give him the chance instead of prolonging it with zipadee zip...

If after going cold turkey, he is still unable to sleep I'd contact your doctor.

We've tried - he screams & screams. It's not worth putting him thru it.

  • I feel your pain, unfortunately I do think still have a bit of startle reflex is normal at 6 months, I read it can last up to 9 months. We've been using the magic sleep suit but now even in that DS is waking up at least once if not several times a night, I think he has realized he can sleep in other positions and not just on his back anymore.

As PP mentioned, its best to just rip off the bandaid, try to find a few days when you have nothing going on and can deal with a few sleepless nights, it may take more than 1-2 (we've tried 3/4 times to rip the bandaid off and haven't made it more than 2 nights w/o sticking the suit back on) But eventually he will figure out how to settle down and sleep. DH and I were just discussing when we can try again this morning.

  • UPDATE; the zipadee-zip worked last night!
  • My daughter was never swaddled (she didn't like it) and she had the startle reflex. She just turned 9 months (today) and she still does it from time to time.
  • Ok I'm glad it's not something else. Thanks :)
  • My Liam at 6 1/2 months has this issue too.  We half swaddled him (about 5 months) to contain his legs and now we are using a Carter's sleep sack.  The first couple nights in his sleep sack was hard but he got use to it.  There are times where I just hold his legs down until he calms down and falls asleep.  When he's sleeping, he will roll and sleep on his belly and those nights are the nights he sleeps longer.  If I can I lay him on his belly when I move him into his crib that helps out a lot.  Startle reflex can be a b*tch sometimes especially when I want to go to sleep!
