Timing for meats

At what age did you introduce meats to your baby?

  • I've heard that you should do the meats first - like the jar stuff from Gerber. We did after after we heard that we should. We do Baby leads well as regular jar/pouch food. Everyone and every website has a different theory and method. I say do what you want! Sweet potatoes, then chicken, then peas, etc. I honestly don't think there is a right and wrong. People say fruits last, etc. Go with your gut and enjoy this time!

Not necessarily true about the jar stufff....We were told we could use actual meat. I'm against jarred and boxed foods and plan to use real stuff. Better source of iron that way
  • Our pedi said no meats till her 9 month appointment and at that point we will not use jarred meat, she will get a little bit if what we are having.

So weird how everyone is so different. We were told to start now at 6 months

  • They do have the meat purees for babies that are able to sit unassisted and/or crawlers from Gerber. My daughter tasted one and didn't like it. I fixed her some chicken (baked) but she didn't like it very well either. My daughter eats purees, my food and I do steam/bake food for her as well. If you like the purees you should try the Beech Nut brand. They smell a lot better than Gerber and they are also mixed with fruit. Like Apples and Chicken, Ham and Pineapple I think. They have a good selection. When she eats purees I have given her something like that.
  • Do your own research and decide for yourself. Everyone has their reasons for what road they decided to take. Just because doctors say something, doesn't mean they are up to date. Look into it yourself. :)

I'm in the BLW camp. Logan is allowed to eat anything he wants except honey. Here he is eating a chunk of ham. He loved it and threw a fit when I took it away. He mostly made a mess out of it, but sucked a lot of juice off. :)

  • You pretty much need to read up and bit and make your own decision.  Every one and every doctor has a different 'theory'  you need to go with what works for you.  Just don't give honey that's pretty much the one no-no before age 1.

My friends 5month old was told by the pediatrician he HAD to eat eggs. peanut and shrimp right away.  The doc's theory was introduce early and they will get used to it and be less likely to be allergic.  This is the complete opposite of most docs thoughts.

Our doc just said if no family allergies serve anything.

We saved fruits until last so she didn't get a sweet tooth.  She had all sorts of meats between about 6.5-8months.  We are doing BLW...she LOVES chopping down on strips of steak and all the other meats we've had.

We do avoid anything salty...but otherwise she gets what ever spices and seasonings we are using.  We want her used to the flavors as we have no intention of cooking our food separately from her unflavored food as she grows.  She seems to love spicy flavors so far!  She also loves salad...not sure why but she gets a kick out of lettuce leaves (both with and without salad dressing).

Our 8 month old has had eggs and shrimp I don't think she's had peanuts yet but that's just because we haven't had it ourselves lately.  We bought a bottle of infants Benadryl to have on hand and are aware of the allergy symptoms.  Remember, first reaction is usually a rash on the face, second exposure can be anaphylactic (if an allergy is present).
