Christmas Toys

I am so bored with childrens toys these days. I am trying to decide what to for DD who will also turn four three weeks later.

What are you all doing?

Re: Christmas Toys

  • We are talking about a trampoline for the backyard, or maybe a playhouse.

  • I understand. DS turns 4 on Dec16th.

For his birthday, he is getting a Nabi Jr tablet. For Christmas, DS is getting four TMNT figures, a science experiment kit, and a huge tub of dinosaurs with a prehistoric landscape playmat.

SD7 is getting the whole set of little house on the prairie books, three monster high dolls, and a DVD with the our four American Girl movies on it. They are also getting The Croods, Joseph: King of Dreams, and Prince of Egypt on DVD.

As far as toys go, we are done shopping. I ordered everything on Amazon and it should be here before Thanksgiving. Depending on the sales before Christmas, we may make a trip to Old Navy. That's the only place I get their jeans from. They are the only ones that fit.
  • I stole the idea of want, need, wear & read from I think @Littlejen for this year.

I am SO over toys that they hardly play with, and the rooms are full so this year Santa is starting a new rule. If you don't leave a bag of old toys by the tree, he will not leave new ones.

Want: they are still young so they aren't in to expensive electronics right now, they will get to circle/pick out a few toys they'd like & Santa will narrow it down.

Need: I think they are getting new organization systems for their rooms, and Santa will put them together and leave some toys in the them (on top of their WANT items).

Wear: I'm thinking an outfit or two, new shoes, etc. They'll also have their new PJ's they will open on Christmas Eve

Read: DC particularly loves books and they both have Tags, so, they may get a couple tag books and a few real books.
  • This year since we don't have any of the kids for Christmas (my kiddos will be with DC and K is with BM) we will be doing a family gift (We're leaning towards Knotts Berry Farm passes).  The kids will still get stuff in their stockings, but not individual gifts.

I feel your frustration:  PJ's birthday is the 11th and K's is just a week later.  I feel like we'll have so much crap in the house by Christmas I'll want to cry...

  • I get DD Christmas at noon. I am going to have a really hard time but will get her most of next year. I will also start a tradition of a nice dinner, games, movies, kind of a just us thing or invite very exclusive family and/or friends for our odd years and make it special.

I just dont enjoy the toy thing. Maybe new board games are in order.

  • My boys are not getting any toys this year. Every year they ask for toys and every year they play with them for a week and they're stashed in a closet to be forever forgotten. All they do is play video games, but this year I'm stumped. There are only 2 video games they want. So their "big ticket" items this year are more ergonomic computer chairs. I'm sure they will be ecstatic to see that Santa brought them two rolly-chairs with big ol bows on them. I have GOT to find something more exciting than chairs. It's not far from getting socks and underwear.

  • Does your DD like Disney? What about Disney on ice tickets or something like that?

I'm laughing at the socks and underwear. It's similar to what DH said when I approached him with the need, read, wear & want idea. They won't get socks & underwear but they'll get an outfit complete with shoes.
  • I feel your pain, I can't stand the endless amounts of toys either that end up getting broken or don't get played with.  This year SS12 and DD10 are getting mostly clothes as that's what they asked for and some other things like cologne/perfume and a few gift cards.  DD5 will be getting new art supplies, some board games and a few other things.  I've finally convinced the older two to go on roller coasters with me, so I think we'll also do passes to Busch Gardens as our family gift :)
  • Pretty much nothing but Legos and books at our house this year! The problem with Lego is that once they've been put together and played with, they have a tendency to come apart and get mixed in together. So there's a period of time when something is "new" that each boy will be like "no that one is mine!" and it is just really hard to keep things separate. After a few weeks that will calm down and everything will end up in the same giant Lego bin.
  • We are doing a game table for my SS (air hockey, foosball, table tennis) for the basement and he's also getting three books, two DVDs, and 2 board games, 1 wrestling ring and 2 wrestlers, and walkie talkies

My DS is getting the gas station for his little tykes car, poppity pop Dino and a laugh and learn puppy

My mom is getting my SS a razor scooter, my dad is getting him an xbox game and that will be the only other crap entering our home! Yay!

The best part is I bought all of this months ago so Santa is DONE. When the toy catalogue came I threw it away lol. Done done done.

I agree with your husband. I hated the "soft" presents as a kid....shoes...hmm, great.....underwear...awesome. That is why I do not do this. The "need" stuff gets bought year round, what's under the tree is only fun, desired stuff that you would not normally buy in day to day life. In this house, it's better to have less presents under the tree, but everything you unwrap is something special.
  • We have a Three Gift for Christmas Rule from Mama and Daddy and One Gift from Santa.

The gifts from us run from practical to fun, but not the "magical" gift, which is Santa's deal.  I try to keep the toys educational, but not IN YOUR FACE educational.  Lakeshore Learning has some really good toys.

Monkey's b-day is January 4th.  So we try to get her a really BIG ticket item for her B-day, something that does not have many pieces.  One year it was an art table that she still uses.  The other was her easel.  This year may be a keyboard so she can take piano lessons.

  • For 16yo SS 14yo SS 14yo DD and 10yo DS it will be mostly gift cards for their particular special stores they like. (mostly gaming) For 5 & 7yo SD's, probably a couple of MH dolls each with maybe some accessories, some age appropriate nail stuff and make up. I have picked up a few things like a scrapbook kit. I will be making play dough and paint soon and they will be in personalized jars/containers. I am also making each child a blanket with their names on it. For oldest SS I am making a t-shirt quilt using some of his old band shirts that he has outgrown and some of my concert tees the just sit in a drawer, of the bands he likes, of course.

The toys they get usually don't get played with... we just end up donating them or giving them to a family member. SD's will get an easel as well. they have the chalkboard/dry erase one but they love to paint and color. DD will probably get a better easel this year but I wanted to get that for her birthday on the 13th.

I'm not sure what the older kids' awesome gift under the tree will be yet.

True. My kids likes clothes, an DS wants boots that are $80 so those would be his "wear" because I won't spend $80 on shoes for my kid for no good reason at this age but he's dying to have them. I guess I have a different definition for "need" for christmas because no, they won't get underwear, shampoo, etc.

This is my Christmas with DD so I am pretty excited. I have no idea to get her since she has been asking for a little sister for Christmas and that is not happening.

DD is in a solar system/planet obsession right now, so I think I will be getting her something related to that but dont know what else. I might be stalking this thread to see what everyone is doing.

    Lol your DD is adorable!

Hahaha. I should practice what I suggest I guess!

DD loved her Magnaformers last year. I love the Mini Kicks scooter. She started riding a 2 wheeler a month ago. DD still likes Duplo blocks especially the people and animals so the zoo was a great deal. And DD is amazing at hula hoop. And the girl can go trough more construction paper than anyone I know...and paint. This year I am seriously considering buying them a new Crayola Pip Squeak markers tower, they got it as a gift and the markers are drying out. I might even spend the money and buy the crayon tower because the markers stay surprising in order so it is worth the money. If you have anyone that wants to spend $15 or so I would strongly suggest asking for those. And my kids love games, Monopoly Jr and Uno were huge a year ago and now Spot It and Jengo.

I sort of feel like we cannot have enough paper, paint, board games and books.

And I feel your pain about the winter birthdays. My kids are getting American Girl dolls for their birthdays (yes even my son!) because that is what they really want and I would rather one gift then many. For Christmas they are both getting an accessory for the doll, crafts, DS wants a clock radio, probably two books each, a puzzle. And they are both getting one other doll, DS wants a hair styling doll and DD is getting Ken and clothes.

I am not sure if I will get them anything else, it depends what their two Aunts say they will get them but I don't think there is anything else that is a must have on their list. Right now DD can still be convinced what to ask for because she wants whatever she sees.

  • We have way too much stuff for DS(5) but we will use some for Christmas, throw a few of the smaller items in his Easter basket, and the rest of the stuff he will earn through good behavior (as part of our behavior modification plan for his ADHD.)

    DS(5)
    -Imaginext DC Superfriends Sets
    -Playskool Marvel Super Hero Sets
    -Playskool Star Wars Sets
    -Star Wars Trouble
    -Magic School Bus LeapPad game
    -This trampoline

DD(will have just turned 1 a week prior):
    -Play Phone
    -Reversible Awake/Asleep Owl puzzle
    -Little People On-the-Go Nativity
Hmmm. I thought I had more for her... I should work on that. That's all I've got for her Birthday & Christmas. I probably should not have given her that play shopping cart last week for no reason... What a fail!
