Car seat safety check

Rant - They want you to have the car seat inspected to be sure it is safe and properly installed, right?  I have called 14 fire stations and NONE of them are participating in this program right now.  WTF?

I feel like you should be able to go to a website to find out where to go. Post over on parenting or SAHM they have some car seat experts on those boards.
  • Loading the player...
  • Wow, ridiculous!  I would google your county & state & "car seat safety" and I bet a page will pop up -- we lost the info my OB gave us and that's how we found where to go.

  • I know the fire stations here will make sure you put it in right, however so does the hospitals so DH said he'd put it in and let them check it at the hospital before we leave.

Do you have to have it done before then where you are?

Yes, our hospital no longer does this.  They said go to the fire department :/

  • Hmmmm, have you checked with your hospital? When we did the tour and got the information from L&D, they gave us a sheet with two fire houses close by to get it scheduled.
I did.  I called them plus tons more and "funding is over right now, so they are on hold from particpating."  Or they just don't offer it at that station.

  • I would also check with local police stations if you don't have any luck with the link above.

  • Try police stations and Sherrif's offices.  They do a lot of the inspections in my area.

  • Also AAA offices do it as well.

  • Our local sheriff's office does them, and the fire station.

  • I work at a community college and our public safety (campus police) does them. It could be worth checking out schools in your area.
  • Google car seat inspection station for your state. Each state has a website that lists inspection sites. Also, besides all that is listed above, sometimes the health department has inspection stations.
  • Thank you all!  I have left tons of messages, so I will wait a day to hear back.  If I do not I am going to try police stations and colleges!  What a pain!

  • Highway patrol/state troopers or whoever patrols your highways will do it, I know they have services since fire stations do not routinely do them anymore.

  • I'm so surprised they won't do it at your fire station.  My husband just took ours yesterday and while he thought he had it pretty tight, it took 5 fire fighters to get it 'just right'.  I agree to maybe try the police station then or someone at AAA.

  • I don't know what state you are in, but I just looked at babies r us and it says online that if you buy your carseat from there they will install it for you.

  • My husband works with CHOP and is a certified car seat tech on the side. He does majority of his checks at fire stations but he works for the health dept. We are in PA but you might want to check your counties health dept website;)

  • So I just found a form online to request an inspection.  Awesome.  Here is what I got back:

Thank you. Your survey has been successfully received by our server.

You will receive an email within 2 weeks with your scheduled appointment. It may take up 30 days for your inspection.

WTF?  Up to 30 days?  This is bullshit and I am pissed.  I am just going to stop by a police station with NO appointment, bat my eyes and cry if I need to.  I have tried all of the links, called all of the numbers and nobody will answer/call back/take appointments at this time.

  • CRISIS AVERTED!  I called the numbers again (that did not answer) and found a police department that will do it today!  Woohoo :)

    Thank you ladies!!!

  • In my state the police stations do it, and you have to call and make an appointment.
  • You might call the Babies R Us in your town before going there, I know the one in my city just stopped doing inspections a few weeks ago "due to budget cuts."

Glad you got it worked out.  A good friend of ours is a fireman/EMT in our (large) city.  He said it's a common misconception that any fire station can inspect it for you--at least here, anyway--and there are only a small number of firefighters/EMTs trained to do it. They have people come to their station all the time wanting to have theirs checked, but have to turn them away.

Our city's Dept. of Public Health lists dates and locations for car seat checks.  Some are on a regular basis at certain locations (i.e. 1st Wednesday of every month at a specific fire station or community center).
