new moms.. how is lo bf'ing?

How are your Lo's breasfeeding? Ds1 was a terrible nurser. It would take me a minimum of an hour per feeding then I had to pump afterwards so it only left me with about 30 min of sleep between each feeding. What's the average amount of time it takes for you to do a feeding? How old is lo? What was lo birth weight? I'm curious to see if weight helps baby be a better nurser. Keep up the good work ladies!

Re: new moms.. how is lo bf'ing?

  • We struggled at home the first few days. Once my milk came in when he was 3 days old he couldn't latch. We started using nipple shields and that helped.

LO was 9 lbs 6 oz. and he's sleeping well. He was spending an hour and half at a time nursing so we realized he was just using me as his pacifier. We introduced the paci a couple nights ago and it's been better since. He nurses for about 30 minutes at a time now, sometimes 40, then accepts a paci and goes to sleep for anywhere for 2 - 2 1/2 hours. He would sleep longer if I let him but I'm waking him every 3 hours to eat.

Our pediatrician said to continue to have him eat every 3 hours until he's 3 weeks old, then just do it on demand.

  • LO was born at 6 lbs 10 oz, went home at 6lbs 6oz, yesterday at the terrible dr appt that I walked out on I found out that he is 6lbs 3oz.

I was letting him sleep over two hrs between feedings but I know he needs to gain weight. So yesterday and today I have been on top of feeding every two.

He is a terrible latcher, I mainly blame my nipples. And when he does latch he does one side and passes out. But he could chug a bottle like no ones business. I didn't want to give in and give a bottle but I want little guy to gain. Also, after my leave he will be in daycare and need to drink from a bottle.

  • Gerard took to breast-feeding very well. I never saw lactation consultant, but the evening nurses who were assigned to me each brought a little bit of advice to the table. They were all very impressed with how well he was doing with breast-feeding considering I was basically doing it on my own from only having watched a ton of YouTube videos and reading a lot on it. He latched on like a pro and eats fairly well. However, he did lose more than 10% of his birthweight and so we were instructed to supplement with formula in the hospital. At our first pediatrician appointment his weight was the same as it was we left the hospital down to 6 1/2 from 7 lbs. 1oz, the doctor said not to and just breast-feed. Frankly, I left the pediatrician appointment very confused. If he's clearly not getting enough by just breast-feeding should not be supplementing? Now, at Day 9, Gerard is basically breast-feeding during the day and overnight I supplement breast-feeding with a bottle when he's seeming particularly ravenous. And that happens too… He'll nurse for 45 minutes but still be thrashing about because he's hungry. I'm not sure if he's not getting enough from the breast or if he's just a particularly hungry little boy. I thought I should start pumping to see how much I was getting out but the pediatrician said that wasn't necessary because you had enough dirty diapers. I'm a bit confused and frustrated, but I'm not ready to throw the towel in yet. I just wish that this was easier LOL I guess that's part of the deal! We have another weigh in Wednesday to see if he's gained any weight.

  • Great thread. Where is the owners manual on this on? LO was born at 37 wks 4 days (5lbs 10oz) and had trouble at first but thanks to some great staff at the hospital both him and I were getting the hang of it by the time we left. I was feeding one side per feed on demand and he wasn't gaining weight so our pediatrician put us on and every 2 hour schedule and when we went back for a weight check he was up 2 oz so he went from 5 lbs 10 oz to 5 lbs 7 oz and is up to 5 lbs 9 oz. pediatrician said we could do 3 hrs at night but still do 2 hrs during the day, 30 min at a time switching sides during the feeds.
  • He's not and I don't want to do it. *tantrum*

DS was born 9 lb. 2 oz. and whisked directly to the NICU while I was under a general anesthetic and they were trying to stop the blood loss. It took two days for both he and I to come around fully; he was on a feeding tube and I did express colostrum for him but being as he and I were on different floors in the hospital and circumstances meant I couldn't get down there, there were issues right from the start.

The bottom line was we could not get him out of the NICU until he was eating the set amount to meet their guidelines based on weight. I could not produce that much colostrum -- no one can! -- nor could I build up a nursing relationship with him to build supply...so formula he got.

I've since switched to EBM and my supply is more than fine but it's hard, very very hard.
