Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Eczema-please share your experience

DS has been diagnosed with a pretty bad case of eczema. Poor baby is itchy and rashy everywhere and hasn't been able to sleep because of it. Benadryl only helps a little at night. The doctor prescribed an oral steroid for a few days to deal with his horrible rash and it has helped. She also prescribed a steroid cream for flare ups and an OTC for minor issues. I'm looking at getting fragrance/dye free shampoos and lotions. Anyone else dealing with eczema? What has worked or not worked in managing it? I appreciate any knowledge or recommendations you can share.

  • Not sure if you breastfeed or not, but cutting out dairy really helped my LOs eczema. I also use babyganics bye-bye dry baby shampoo and Burts Bees lotions. I have also heard putting lotion on and then putting aquaphor over the spots. My dd got it a few weeks after she was born, but has since cleared up.

  • Both of our twins have eczema. We bath them with Cetaphil which is mild and fragrence free (it's what our Pedi recommended).

After their bath we apply prescription stregnth steriod cream to any flare up patches and then cover them in head to toe with Hydrolatum which is a cream that you have to get from the Pharmacist but does not require a prescription. It has worked WONDERS.

  • My daughter has it! She has since birth but the last 2-3 months it's been getting pretty bad. I use all fragrance free. I use the Aquaphor baby soap for baths, Aveeno moisture relief lotion and eczema lotion on her non bath days and coconut oil on her bath days. We also had to get a prescription for cortisone cream when she has outbreaks a couple of months ago.
  • My almost 7 month old son has eczema and I have tried so many options! What works for us:

Tide Free & Gentle powder laundry detergent. (I use this on EVERYTHING I wash in my house. Blankets, bibs, spit cloths, etc. and my whole family's clothes, that way when he rubs his face on our clothes, it doesn't upset his eczema.)

Downy Free & Sensitive fabric softener.

Bounce Free & Sensitive dryer sheets.

As far as his bath, I use Dove Sensitive Skin Unscented bars (for body and hair.)

After bath, I slather on Eucerin Original Healing Creme (I buy in a 16 oz jar at Walmart for about $12.00.)

This is the only combination I have found to work. Good luck! :)

  • I use Burt's Bees on their hair only, and I only wash DD's hair every other day (DS gets too much food in his hair to do this). Just plain water for their rest of their bodies. We put vaseline or aquaphor on anything that looks like it might turn into an eczema flair up, several times/day. For flair ups, we use hydrocortisone cream. Since I started using African Black Soap, I've noticed that I haven't had much eczema, so that might be something worth trying as well.

  • DD#2 has eczema. We bathe every night and lotion up with Cetaphil lotion. We only do soap every 4 or 5 days and use california baby super sensitive wash. So far this has cleared up all the eczema from the neck down. On the back of her neck and cheek we keep getting flare ups and are treating the cheek with prescription Desodine.  It is taking 2 weeks to clear up. Regular hydrocortisone was not working and we sought help from a dermatoligist. I don't really think the Desodine is working so well since it take two weeks to clear up a flare up the size of a quarter.

  • My oldest has eczema, not bad, but still.  What my doctor said was moisturize, moisturize, moisturize and that has worked.  We have Vaseline brand in a white  bottle, no dyes and all that.  I slather him up constantly.  When it's really bad she said we could put hydrocoritzone cream on it.  Also, after a bath it's good to put the lotion on before they get fully dried off.  We use a bar of Dove soap, the white kind for sensitive skin, no dyes and what not.  Hope that helps.

  • The only thing we found to work was calendula cream.  We bought the california baby brand and would put it on his flare ups.  The flare up was typically gone within a day after we used it.
  • My boys have a mild case, red and dry but not itchy most of the time.  We use Burt's Bee's for bath time and Honest Company lotion and our Pedi gave us a prescription oil that we use when it flares up.
  • I've heard of other mamas having great success with hazelwood necklaces for their babes.  Might be worth a try, if nothing else seems to be working.

  • My oldest daughter had severe eczema when she was a baby.  Her pedi recommended mixing equal parts of aquaphor, eucerin cream, and desitin and applying it 3 times daily.  It really helped.  It can also be used for diaper rash.  It was definitely our miracle cream when none of the steroid creams helped.
If you are breastfeeding, breast milk is supposed to help clear up eczema.
Good luck!  I hope LO is feeling better very soon!!
  • My LO has pretty bad eczema and it took us forever to figure out what it was. We saw an allergist, though they wouldn't skin test her until she is a year, but they gave us a lotion which I have dubbed the "miracle lotion." It's called Vanicream (you can find it on Amazon). It's been fantastic. We've discovered that external allergens have been what are bothering her. So we bathe with Dove sensitive skin and use Charlie's detergent (also on Amazon). The Charlie's soap is awesome. I don't trust the store brand free and clear. We use that on our own clothes, but I swear it still bothered her. She also gets slathered in the Vanicream every night but only bathed 2x/week. Her face still breaks out a bit, but she's teething and drooling a ton. So I just manage her face the best I can. It's not too bad.

We tried so many other lotions that claim to be for eczema and they still irritated her skin. Even tried straight Vaseline. We did use a topical prescription hydrocortisone cream from the pedi when it got really bad, but she hasn't had a breakout since we switched to Charlie's and Vanicream.

  • Thank you everyone! So far it's staying clear. I'm going to try coconut oil and some of the other things you all recommended. I'm glad to know what we're dealing with is completely normal for eczema babies.

  • My baby didn't have a bad case of eczema but it was enough to feel bad about it and get something for it. So I took her into the dr. and they said to not use anything with fragerance and to use a vaseline. I tried that and it on;y seemed to help a lil bit, so I researched and read alot of reviews and we decided to buy and try Aveeno Baby Eczema Cream and after 2 days it was completely gone. I put it on the spots where she usually gets it and it keeps it clear. I only use it til it's gone, it'll keep it clear but every now and then you can start to feel little rough patch and I put some of the cream on and then it goes away. So definately give that a try it's close to $10 for a bottle but it is well worth it, it's for your  babys comfort and health and it works.
  • I've had eczema for 10+ years. Now my dd has it and hopefully ds does not. What works for us is, 1st-seeing a dermatologist. Everything we use is fragrance free and I don't use dryer sheets or fabric softener. I always (actually typing with greasy fingers now) hydrate with ointment either aquaphor or now I use The Honest Co healing ointment.

Don't use a lot of soap IF you use it.
Make sure everything you use is free of dyes/parfumes(fragrance) and limited ingredient list.
Aveeno never worked for me but give it a shot.
Virgin Coconut Oil is great too.
