House cleaner cost?

Our budget may have just gotten an adjustment that would allow us to have someone come clean the house.  If you don't mind sharing, how much do you pay for what frequency and what do they do?  Do you really feel that what they do saves you a significant amount of time or do you just hate the cleaning? :)

Re: House cleaner cost?

  • Having a cleaning service is the best.thing.ever. Seriously, I've cut lots of other expenses before I'd cut this. We pay $135 every two weeks, but we live in Boston and use Merry Maids, which is more expensive but great for insurance, reliability, and flexibility. They do a much better, more thorough job cleaning than DH or I ever would, frankly. They do a general cleaning (vacuum, mop floors, wipe down all surfaces, general straightening, window cleaning, bed making, etc) in every room and deep clean (clean everything, including baseboards etc) in a different room each visit. Our house looks so much nicer, and the cleaning lowers our stress levels tremendously.

In in MA but out more near 495 :)  Mind me asking your square footage and the general set up of your house?  I know in order to do the quote they want to know things like how many living space areas you have and what not.

  • We have a 2400 sq ft 3 BR. They'll also ask about special services (they offer laundry services, for example), and some rooms cost more than others (we have a nursery, which is cheaper than a standard bedroom). So for us, the cost covers cleaning a first floor with hardwood floors that includes an eat-in kitchen, dining room, family room, living room, entry way, and powder room, and a second floor that has carpeting, master bedroom, master bath, second bedroom, second full bath, and nursery. We don't have them do laundry but we do leave clean sheets out, so they strip the beds and remake them. They'll come out to look around and do a quote; be sure you ask for new client specials and referral discounts. :) Good luck!
  • Boston metro area, $110 once a month for a full cleaning (floors, counters, tables, dusting, bathrooms, fridge). Totally worth it as we hate doing bathroom cleaning. We have 1200sq ft of space being cleaned.

Jumping in as a prospective cleaning service buyer....

Do any of you have a dog? Does having a pet increase cost?

  • We have a dog (Beagle) and a cat.  It did not change the costs.
  • We pay $150 every two weeks. It's a 2500 sqf 4 bedroom, 3 bath house. They do a thorough job including vacuuming the couches (we have cats) but do not do "extras" (i.e. no ceiling fans, fridge, inside oven, laundry). They do make the beds with clean sheets I leave out. It takes 2 peopls about 2.5-3 hours to do.

Yes, it saves me a significant amount of time since I pretty much don't do any cleaning other than dishes, laundry, wiping down counters every night and setting my auto-sweeper (Mint) to run every night. Also DH hates any cleaning so this has eliminated a major source of past frictions for us.

  • We just started and the person came out to look at the house first and what kinds of things we wanted done and gave us an estimate . We had a long big clean done  ($$$) and will have them in 1 time for month for maintenance. Their rate ends up being $30 per hour.  We're just not eating out at much to make it work for our budget. We both think it's money well spent.

  • We live in the southeast in a MCOL area. We pay $70 every two weeks for standard cleaning. It takes her about 3 hours. It is not a deep clean, but it makes a huge difference. If she came every week, it would go down to $50 per week. I'm considering doin ghtat. I'm also considering paying her, say $65 every week and asking her to do laundry while she cleans. I swear, we have a basket of clean laundry that's been sitting around our house for a week. Our girl is not with a company though, nor is she insured. It's a risk, but she's very responsible and professional and does a great job.
  • We pay $105 every other week.  Our house is about 2500 sq ft and we have a dog who sheds.  I don't think that impacted the cost.

And yes it is well worth the money as it saves me tons of time.

  • $75/wk for 4 br/3.5 ba house. They do change sheets, start laundry and empty dishwasher on top of the usual cleaning most services offer.

I have a dog and it changed the frequency of the cleaning service not the price. I chose to have them weekly vs every other week.

    Best investment!

  • Its relatively inexpensive where I am, in Dallas area. I pay $100 every two weeks or $80 every week, depending on what we need. We pick up the house before she comes so she mostly does actual cleaning and she spends maybe 5-6 hrs. House is 3500 sq ft.

I'm in Chicago.  I pay Mexican or Colombian cleaning ladies that my mom and dad know.  I've used one (the wife of one of my dad's workers) and I paid her $80.00 for like 4 or 5 hours of cleaning.  She came like 2 times a month.  I'm using another lady now my mom knows and I'm paying her the same.

Also I have a small house, like 1200 Sq ft maybe? 3 bedrooms 2 small bathrooms and a basement.
  • In Texas we play an independent lady and her husband 90 dollars per visit for a 2400 sq. ft home. 4 BR, 2 1/2 baths.

We also have 5 cats. Sometimes pets and # of occupants make a difference.

My house cleaner rocks and lives in Marlborough. Not sure what part of 495 belt you are on, but if near there, I can PM you her contact info if you'd like.

She comes to my house every 3 weeks and it's so worth it.
I live about 20 minutes from there.  Is she through a company or private?  I haven't broached this with DH yet but send me her info in case we go for it :)

I haven't cleaned my house in 6 yrs.  Well, straighten up and wipe counters, sure.  But clean?  Not at all.

Our cleaning service is amazing!  They cost $125 per visit and come every 2 weeks.  They deep clean one room per visit, clean the entire house, including inside the fridge, blinds and windows, and window sills once per month. It's amazing and the best money we've ever spent!

    Do it!

  • Hiring a cleaning lady has been great for my marriage :)
I pay her $80 every other week, she is here for about 4 hours. She cleans the bathrooms, kitchen, vacuums and cleans the floors.

  • 100 every month. I usually give her a 20 dollar tip, as well. She stays for about 5 hours. Our home is 3800 sq. ft, 4 bedrooms. I think this is a great deal, especially since I was paying $60 (before tip) for my 900 sq. ft condo in the city.

  • Jumping in with a question. Do they come when you are at work? If so and you have a dog what do you do with the dog? Ours has run of the house during the day and I could see him just following the cleaner and barking at the vacuum the whole time.
  • $175 including the tip and we're in a HCOL area. Two ladies come once a month and we have a 3br/2ba townhouse of about 1500 sq feet and two shed monsters that some would consider cats. They sweep, mop, vacuum, deep clean the bathrooms, dust and wipe down surfaces, change sheets. It probably takes 2.5hrs? It's life changing. I love our cleaning service so much.

Ours comes on Saturday. we wanted someone who would do weekends so we could enjoy it clean the most and also so we could crate our dog for a shorter period of time. He normally has the run of the house, but I'm afraid of him biting
We have them come on a weekday while we're at work.  We lock the dog in her crate that day.

  • We pay $70 each week for about 1200 sqft. I have a fairly small house but its worth it for my sanity when I'm working. My husband isn't much help around the house and I can't stand cleaning every spare minute I'm off work now that I have two kids.
