convertible car seat instead of infant car seat?

I'm looking up some convertible car seats for baby number three and need some advice. We just bought a Nissan Pathfinder and I was thinking about getting a convertible car seat instead of using our infant car seat we've used for both girls, I'm wondering if anyone used a convertible instead of the infant car seat and asking how it worked for you and baby? Was it a pain to get baby out when he/she was asleep? What type/brand did you get and how do you like it?

We skipped the infant car seat and went straight to a convertible. When we were out and about with baby in the early days, I either used the Moby wrap or our stroller (City Mini). DS never seemed that bothered if he was asleep and we moved him from the stroller to the car seat or vice versa - he cried for a little bit but was always out again pretty quickly. I have absolutely no regrets about not using the infant seat.

I bought the Britax Marathon 70 - I really like the seat, and DS still has lots of room to grow in it. He was a slightly above average size newborn and I used a special infant positioning foam wedge sold by Britax which helped him fit in the seat. He has turned out to be a fairly small kid - less than 20th percentile for both height and weight, so the notorious Britax short shells are not yet an issue for us. For the next baby I will probably skip the infant carrier again and right now would buy the Chicco Nextfit. My understanding is it fits newborns better and has a higher RF height limit.

  • We skipped the infant carrier and went to a convertible. We did not have any problems, but we live in the city and with our first, barely drove (pretty much one a month on the weekends to my parents). We drive a bit more know that we have moved to a different neighborhood, but I think we will stick with the same (convertible) for the new baby.
