Another Milk question

My DD is transitioning to milk after the pedi gave us the go ahead last week.  Since then, we have done 2 oz milk to 4 oz formula.  Since then, she has had very loose poops and terrible diaper rash.  Normally she went one a day sometimes 2 but now it's like 8-9 times. Is this normal and will her body adjust or should I cut back on the amount of milk and increase the formula combo?  I do have a call into pedi but he hasn't responded and interested in what others have to say.

Re: Another Milk question

  • Sounds to me like a possible allergy. I would also slow it down, maybe even cut it down to only 1 oz, and talk to the pedi.

  • She eats a ton of cheese, yogurt and cottage cheese so I don't get why milk is any different.

  • like Nicb said transition slower

DD had the SAME THING! She could eat cheese and milk fine but when we introduced milk we did too fast! We slowed it down and her poops went back to normal and her rash went away-- now she drinks milk just fine.

    Good luck!

Cheese, yogurt, and cottage cheese have a lot less lactose than plain milk, because that's what the bacteria used in the culturing process feed on. In fact, many yogurts and well-aged hard cheeses have almost no lactose at all.

Too much dairy typically causes constipation, not diarrhea, so the fact that she can eat cultured dairy products but has trouble with regular milk points to some degree of lactose intolerance. It could be temporary, just brought on because her system is overwhelmed by the transition. A doctor would probably tell you to cut back or cut it out, then reintroduce it slowly to see if the problem persists.

  • sounds like an intolerance to the milk protein in that form, as others said. try lessening the amount of milk:formula in the ratio and see how that goes

  • So we stopped after the first day of milk and dr finally called back. She has been back on formula. Well stop for two weeks. Funny thing my mother gave her 4 oz of 2% today forgetting I asked her not to do milk and she had been fine and no loose stools

  • Possibly try a different kind of milk, coconut and almond are both good choices
