Moms of tall babes with compact cars

Ok, another car seat questions. Seems like my only option for my giant kid is graco my size 70 or diono radion R100 (and similar) but I have a honda civic. I've already reluctantly moved his current car seat behind the passenger seat because I cannot get him in and out without bonking his head on the top of the car and awkwardly dragging him out (I waited until there were no parents around to pull him out when the seat was still in the middle). Is there really no cheaper options for tall kids to continue RF?

Re: Moms of tall babes with compact cars

  • Is your issue just with getting him in and out?  DD is tall and we just sort of wedge her in there and sometimes she (gently) hits her head.  I don't see that as a great reason to switch to FFing.

  • No, he's not FF. He's RF behind the passenger seat because it's seriously a challenge to get him in and out.

  • Right, I knew that he was still RFing.  But it sounded like you were considering changing him to FFing because of the difficultly with getting him in and out.

I guess I'm confused about your question :)  Now that I read it again - you're trying to choose a convertible seat that is good for tall kids but will fit well in a small car - is that it?

Yes! Graco My Size 70 was suggested to me on the carseat FB group but in another post, someone commented that it didn't fit in her small car.

Got it.  DH drives a small car (the Nissan Leaf - same body style as the Nissan Versa), and I found a guide on the Nissan website that lists the seats that are supposed to fit best in that car, and then I researched them.  I wonder if Honda has something similar?

Or, can you go to a store and try some out in the car?

  • We have a tall kid and a Honda Fit. He's just fine in our Marathon and can RF until 40 lbs.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • I've always read that the Graco My Size is pretty compact, so I would try it out in your car.
  • We had a Radian and a Civic. I had to scoot the passenger seat all the way up to get the carseat in, so then the passenger was stuck with their knees on the dashboard. I'd say a Radian in a Civic is not a great fit. We plan on having more kids, so decided to go ahead and get a bigger car now. I know that doesn't answer your question exactly, but I'd definitely try a Radian out before you buy it because DH and I are both too tall to fit in the front with a Radian in the back.

  • Have you tried just putting him down on the back seat of the car and seeing if he'll climb in on his own? Ds happily climbs into the seat, but with his knees where his butt should be, so I still have to turn him around, but it avoids the head banging.
  • Our lo is tall, and we have a britax marathon in a Toyota matrix. It works well, and he fits in it well. Its a bit pricy but worth it.

  • We have 2 kids in compact cars. When I looked for something that would RF to 2 the choices seemed to be the diono, graco, TrueFit. You can get an angle adjuster for the Diono so it doesn't take up so much space front-to-back. I also think they are upgrading the line, so you should be able to get a good deal on one. And it is $$, but your kid will be in it for the next 4 years, and if you get one with a shorter shell, then you'll just need a new one within the year.
  • I have the Radian in a civic behind the passenger seat. I had to get the angle adjuster that sits the seat more upright and with that it fits perfectly. There's plenty of room for my 6' DH to ride comfortably.
