veggie tricks?

LO has gotten to be such a picky eater. I always offer what we're eating and show him how tasty it is as I eat it, and at best will take a lick, giggle about it, shudder, demand i remove it from his tray and not go near it again.  He'll sometimes eat a few select veggies like sweet potato, squash, cooked carrots and corn, but won't go near green veggies. He also avoids most all meat.  But last night we had a veggie break through!  We offered him broccoli dipped in a homemade cheese sauce and he loved it!  I feel like it was a step in the right direction.  What veggie "tricks" have you tried for your picky eaters?  (Any ideas for meat as well?)

  • I'm interested to hear this too. My trick used to be letting her use my utensils because she loved eating like a "big girl" but now she's noticed she can also use the utensils in other ways like picking up her food and shoveling it on to the floor. So far our only hit is spaghetti, everything else is a no go and results in 30 minutes of whining and "no, no, no, no...." from her and anger from me. I wish she ate half as well at home as she does at daycare.

  • We don't do anything exceptionally creative. DD loves plain peas.
When I can I'll purée cooked veggies into pasta sauces or add it to bread recipes.
We have found that DD will eat just about anything with sauce on it. Some of her favorites are veggie enchilladas, sesame tofu and broccoli, and raw vegetables with salad dressing. She also loves when she gets to use a fork and dip veggies into sauces (super messy).
I try to put lots of fruits and veggies on her plate with a few carbs to start, since she will fill up on carbs otherwise. Some days she eats a lot of veggies and other days she is not interested.

  • DD loves to dip. She will eat just about anything if she can dip it in something (except green peppers - she hates those). I make or buy purees for her to use as "dip" (like apple- sweet potato) but she also gets katsup, ranch, marinara, cheese sauce, plain applesauce, etc sometimes.

  • My kids eat raw veggies with dip a lot too. Or I make food with them in it like chili, soups, pasta with veggies like peas mixed in. Almost everything I make starts with cut up cooked veggies like meat loaf tonight has celery and onions in it.

  • Shredded carrots or beets are good in meatloaf too :)

  • DS was in heaven eating tomato based veggie & chicken soup at daycare so I made a large batch.  I used the frozen mix of Mediterranean veggies (squash, carrots, peppers, and green beans), cannaloni beans, spinach, a can of fire roasted tomatoes, and chicken.  I mixed it with rice today for lunch and he loved it. Next time I'll add some pasta or just give it to him like soup.

    This sounds delicious!!
and nutritious! LOL.  I forgot and some chicken broth.
  • I am jealous of all of you. I usually resort to the pouches. DS won't eat any kind of sauce so mixing veggies in there doesn't work. He definitely won't eat them as is. I baked them in muffins and put them in burritos for a while but even that has stopped working. All I can get him to eat is bread/crackers, fruit, and cheese.
