Secondary IF

WWYPB?

That's what would your plan be?! WWYPB, duh. Anywho, met with my RE today to discuss IVF. He said if this IUI doesn't work, I should do another since IUIs "reset" if you've conceived, as I did in July. So basically I'm currently on IUI #2 after my mc, and he wants 3 tries before IVF. So I want opinions, if you were 1/6 on IUIs, respond well to meds (I typically have 2 follies), but have been TTC for 2 years, would you move onto IVF? FWIW, it'll be $8-$10K OOP for us.

Two DDs 10/08 and 08/10, no primary IF
TTC #3 since 10/2011 - dx unexplained/weak ovulation
 3 BFN clomid + TI cycles, 5 BFN clomid/gonal f IUIs, 1 mmc IUI
2/19/2014 IVF #1 Unexpected low E2 (oversuppressed) -> increased to max doses = 3 or 4 follicles, converting to IUI
BFFP Saw 1 beautiful heartbeat at 6w6d, follow up u/s at 9w showed mmc. Eff this.
NTNP 5/2014-9/2014, OPKs and TI 10/2014 - 1/2015.
RPL testing all normal, AFC, AMH, and FSH all normal.
IVF 1.2 1/22/2014 natural cycle start, AFC 28, 300 gonal f/150menopur.
ER 2/3/15 14R 8M 3F w/ICSI Day 5 transfer on 2/8/15 of one "Grade A+" blast and have TWO frosties!

Re: WWYPB?

  • Argh! This is so hard! Did they give a % of success with the IUI? I responded great with (evil) Clomid, and H had an excellent sample, but she only gave us a 10% success rate (my clinic sucks big saggy balls) that's what motivated me to move forward with the IVF.

If I had better odds with IUI, maybe in the 25-35% range, I'd totally keep doing them because they are SO much easier than all this IVF crap.

Then again I can totally see being fed up with the IUIs at this point! 6 is crazy, but you did get pregnant, so maybe 3rd time will be a charm and bring you a sticky baby?

Gah! I don't know! This is hard.

Since you did get pregnant with your IUIs at one point, I'm wanting to say give it one more shot (hopefully 3rd time will be a charm) then at least you'd be able to say you really gave it all you could before you move forward with that huge financial commitment, right? And just hope and pray it won't even come to that point.

  • That's tough! Is there any OOP expense for the IUI? If there isn't I'd do another one or two. If there is I'd move on to IVF. 6 is a lot, and to have 2 more you'd be at 8 and possibly still not be pregnant.

  • Lol I feel like I'm having a conversation with myself! I can't remember the IUI success rate...I want to say 15-25%. IVF rate is 42%. I'm just getting to the point where I want to be done, but I know I'll regret not doing everything possible. So yeah, keep on keeping on with IUIs, or bite the bullet and fork over the cash? So yep, I'm talking in circles 8-}

I didn't explain that well...I'm currently on #5, and will for sure do #6. So, hypothetically, after that I'd be at 1/6, or 16% success. So more IUIs or move to IVF in February? IUIs cost us about $100 upfront, and $300ish added to my account, which has a $100/month payment, and will cover up to $15k total for lifetime fertility treatments. I think I'm around $4k currently, and need $8-10k for ivf. Sheesh, kudos to anyone who followed that! Gah I hate this decision.

  • I'd move on to IVF.  Its a lot more intensive, but you're likely to reach your goal much quicker, too.  Just my two cents.  Good luck!

  • I'd personally move onto ivf. Pregnancy rates are so much lower than ivf.

  • IVF. We were given a 45% chance of it working, with only a 10% chance for iui. We were completely OOP, so I know the decision is tough.

I hope you don't mind me posting here, but I like to check in on you girls periodically! The decision for us to move to IVF after failed IUI's (including a m/c) was a bit easier for me because of our amazing insurance coverage....but, a big part of my decision was also that emotionally I just couldn't take the roller coaster of IUI's anymore knowing that IVF has a much higher success rate.

I would consider not just the financial toll, but the emotional toll that continued IUI's will put on you and your family. Good luck with whatever you decide!
