Typically it is around 20 weeks...my friend just emailed me and at her 14 week u/s they told her she was having a boy...who knows how accurate it is at that point though.
I know of women who have been given an idea of the sex (NOT gender ) at 12 weeks, which is still the 1st tri. I'm curious how many other women have found out that early.
Yeah, you'd get a lot more answers if you posted this on 2nd tri. Most people have the big u/s around 20 weeks. That's when ours was, though we decided we do not want to find out until baby is here!

And yes, I realize it's not a definitive answer. Most of the women I know of who had an idea at 12 weeks said it stayed the same later on, too. Which surprised me b/c I've heard that early on, girls often look like boys b/c they're so swollen.
I know I was given the option to have first trimester screening. In which case they can determine the sex without an ultrasound (from what I gather they use a needle and take out some fluid) in which case you can find out much earlier than 18-20 weeks and be much more certain as it's a genetics testing, not just a "looks like a penis" on the u/s monitor.

When they guessed at my 12 week scan they were wrong, at that time they guessed boy.

Ok, so if you "know" all this stuff, then why ask the question. Google would have done you better.

umm...sex and gender are the exact same my dear...wow
The doctor will do this between 10-13 weeks, and they can tell the sex of the baby since they obtain DNA. To my knowledge, it's only done when you have risk factors, though.

Um, my dear... it was a joke in reference to a big discussion a couple of weeks ago about the difference between gender and sex. Ask The_Jen626 and she'll tell you they are NOT the same.

No, I'm just talking about women who have had u/s at 12-13 weeks and the doctor or u/s tech has given them an idea of what they're having. I know some women that have been given an idea at that time.
Even at the 12/13 week screen, they can only give you an idea. Granted I've never heard of someone finding out its a boy at 13 weeks and then hearing its a girl a few weeks later.

Because we're supposed to know about a conversation you had with someone weeks ago. So I'm taking it that this "The_Jen626" is just as smart as you then....nuff said.

Do you have a week by week pregnancy book, if not go get one NOW! Male and female happenings (meaning males start producing testosterone and sperm and females start making eggs in the ovaries) start around 110 wks but you can NOT tell by ultrasound, as they look exactly the same. If you had an amnio, then yes they can tell you for sure the sex at an earlier date....but at 12 wks that is still a 50/50 GUESS!!!! Even at 16 or 17 wks I would consider it a guess, heck I just had a friend that had her u/s at 18 wks and they would only say that the thought it was a girl but were not sure.
Now go get that book!!!!!!!!! I highly recomend The Mayo Clinic Guide to Healthy Pregnancy, it is WAY better than What to expect...
I found this site for you, with the 'real' pictures it is easier to tell a difference, but with the ultrasound pictures I think it would be way to close to predict the gender/sex before the 18-20wk ultrasound. Check out the girl...she isn't even completely done 'changing' (for lack of a better word) until 20wks!
A reputable ultrasound tech is not likely to guess at the baby's sex at 12 weeks. They might say that they have an idea by the "angle of the dangle" method, but that's frequently inaccurate.

Actually they are different...you should look it up...

With my first pregnancy they told me boy at my 14 wk also and then I had my daughter. It cannot be trusted....

I just met a lady who did ultrasounds for her career and just retired. She said with a good u/s picture she could make a guess at 10 weeks and she was rarely wrong. I don't get to check it out because my ultrasound won't be until 16 wks but I believe her!
Re: Who knows what they're having?
According to the bump, I'm having a green olive!
LOL.
that rocks

You didn't ask that though. It was a random question you asked, as if you didn't know what you were talking about at all.
You don't get it, but whatever...I'm done.
Way to fling the sex vs. gender door wiiiiide open, MissLea.
And this whole post is hilarious. OP may just have well asked when you all started feeling movement or what BH feels like.
Are you talking about CVS (chorionic villus sampling)? I believe that's what aawilson was referring to in her post, too.

Does it LOOK like it was a conversation that just I had with someone??

I do, a boy. We found out this past Tuesday, i was 20 weeks and 2 days.

At 11 weeks, there's a 50% error rate in one study they quote.
The only way a first tri mom-to-be would have found out the sex of the baby is if she's had CVS.

Yes, you are supposed to know. Everyone who posts on this board about a prior discussed topic is worthy to be flamed so.... nuff said
isnt that a rule, especially a 2nd tri would know?
