Advice please for bridesmaid dress size

Hello,
I'm a FTM due at the end of May. I'm also a bridesmaid in my friend's wedding early July.  The wedding will be five weeks after my due date, so I could be wearing this dress as soon as three weeks after delivery.  My friend wants us to order the dress this weekend and I am struggling to decide what size to order.  I plan to order a larger size than my pre-pregnancy size, but I don't want to order too large in an effort to keep alteration costs down.
Does anyone have any advice about how many sizes I should go up from my pre-pregnancy dress size when I order? Four sizes? Five?

Thanks for any advice :)

Re: Advice please for bridesmaid dress size

  • I was in a wedding 6 weeks after my dd was born. I gained 40 lbs with the pregnancy. The biggest thing is probably the style of dress you will be wearing. Mine was an empire waist, so it was forgiving of my tummy. I still looked a little pregnant and was 20 pounds heavier than I was pre-pregnancy, but for me my boobs got HUGE. I was bfing and they like quadrupled in size. I am 5'6" tall and normally weigh 130 lbs. I was 173 when I delivered, and was around 150 at the wedding. I normally would order a size 4-6, I ordered a 10 and it fit fine everywhere except the boobs, I had to have boob material added...

  • The style does matter, but I will say, I was in a wedding 8 weeks after giving birth and I had ordered a dress 2 sizes up (I usually wear about a 12, I ordered a 16 just in case) and I was SWIMMING in it. I still had about 20 lbs to lose, but the dress was falling off of me. In hindsight, I would've ordered a 14. The dress was strapless but it had an empire waist.

  • I'd order two sizes up, and keep in mind the sizing on bridal stuff is usually way way off from normal clothing.  Don't look at the numbers because they are always horrible for self esteem, but I would have them measure you now and go two sizes up from there.  I'd rather pay for alterations than have to scramble for a dress at the last minute.

I gained 22 lbs last pregnancy and was down to my pre-pregnancy weight at day 14 postpartum, but my body did not look the same.

    Just order a bigger dress.

  • When I got my BFP with DS, I was a size 10.  After having him, I was a size 14.  Five weeks after your birth (assuming you have your baby on your due date -- you could easily go over by up to two weeks), you will probably have a little bit of a tummy still.  So if you can, opt for a dress forgiving in that area, and I think two or three sizes ought to be fine.  Remember, it's easier to take a dress in than it is to let it out, so I would err on the side of larger.

  • FWIW, I would drop out of the wedding altogether if I were you.  Three to five weeks post-partum, I was a fucking mess emotionally and physically.  And breastfeeding meant I couldn't leave LO for more than two hours at a time.

  • It depends on the dress.  I am in a wedding in March and I ordered 4 sizes up just in case.  I figured I can always have it altered.  I am a FTM, so I have no idea how big I will be!
  • For three to five weeks after delivery I would order two sizes up.

  • I would say order 2-3 sizes up as it's easier to alter a dress if its big rather than too small!

I'm having the same problem since I am in a wedding 4 days before my due date!

    Good luck!

  • I actually am going to be moh in my sister's wedding one month after I deliver. I'm normally a 4 but I figured I would buy a 6 and it'd be fine. Now I'm actually wondering if I should just order an 8 to be safe.

  • Man, this is dependent on so many things.  Are you the type of person who gains weight easily or will you likely be active and only gain a minimal amount? Or in between?

Personally, I was probably at least 4 sizes larger immediately after pregnancy than I was before.  Of course, I was bed rested and had a lot of other issues that aren't typical...but sometimes that happens.  I would probably err on the side of the dress being too big, though, and having to have it taken in. Better safe than sorry.

  • I'm in SIL's wedding June 28. EDD is May 2nd - May 4th. I would highly highly advise talking to a seamstress. Show them the style of the dress, they can advise you what size you should order and they'll be able to take it in. Letting a dress out is not forgiving.

  • Thanks everyone for your helpful input!! The dress isn't very forgiving unfortunately. I will just order really big and hope for the best. Maybe I'll just ask my friend for a very large bouquet to hide my stomach behind ;)
  • I'm going to have this same dilemma soon.  My sister is getting married in early July.  I plan on asking the bridal shop staff what they recommend.

  • Not to be negative but you may want to think of dropping out. I ended up having to have a c-section and two weeks after I would have been in no shape to be a wedding
