Preemies

Hi there!

I just wanted to introduce myself to everyone. I am a FTM to a precious baby boy, Connor. He was born almost exactly 1 month ago at 35 weeks. I had a relatively uneventful pregnancy, aside from some spikes in my blood pressure. I went to work on a Monday morning (I'm a teacher) and called the Dr. due to some cramps, got to L&D around 10:30 and by 12:30 we were headed into a C-section! My cramps were contractions and LO HR was decelerating. He weighed 3 lb 8 oz.
We were very fortunate that Connor was only on oxygen for a couple of hours. He had some pretty severe issues with his glucose levels, and they finally resolved in week 3 of our NICU stay.
Feeding was a battle, but last week he suddenly started to eat like a champ! He now weighs in at 5 lb 3 oz:)
We have been in the NICU for 4 weeks 3 days now. Our major hold up now is bradycardia episodes. DH and I are so grateful that he is a healthy, happy preemie and we realize that we are so blessed. However, we are beginning to feel like we will NEVER get out of the NICU :(
I'm glad I found this board and I look forward to learning from all of you and supporting you in any way I can.
Sorry this was so long!

  • I think that is one of the harder parts of the NICU stay. They are so close to coming home but every time they have an episode it's another 5-7 days and that can be hard. I know what helped me when we were in the phase was to do the last minute prepping for her to come home. Making sure I had enough of everything, getting all the clothes washed, bottles sanitized, wipe warmer set up. All that good stuff.

  • Congrats on the birth of your son! I like his name! I'm sorry he's still in the NICU. As PP said, it's so hard when they're close to coming home and something keeps coming up to delay it. The week before coming home our DD had a Brady and that automatically gave her another 5 days. Every day we had our fingers crossed that she hadn't had another one. Best of luck to you that you'll have him home ASAP!

  • Congrats and welcome!! We had the same issue with leaving the NICU. My 34 weeker was eating great, gaining weight and doing awesome except for the Brady's. They ended up putting him on caffeine and they finally stopped. He stayed on the caffeine at home for a month too.
This was the hardest part for us too.. I remember thinking everyday "oh we are soooo close!". Don't worry, you'll get him home! :)
  • We've all been there! Keep your chin up. Your day will come. Congrats on the baby boy. I love his name!!!!

  • Congrats on your son!! I'm sorry he's still in the NICU. It seems like time stands still during the stay, but eventually that glorious take home day comes and it is all worth it. Hang in there!!!
  • Congratulations on the birth of your DS. My second DD had horrible issues with B's. Which pretty much keep us in the NICU another week. I hated that the Neo would that they she needed to grow out of them. I wanted her to come up immediately. Praying that DS is home with you soon.
