NSAIFR-dog troubles

So within the last couple of months our two shepherd mixed dogs have got into 2 bad fights with each other. They bite each other causing gashes on legs, face, body and draw blood. Nothing gets them to stop. We've tried throwing things at them, yelling, spraying with a hose, etc. They finally just stop on their own and then lick each others wounds.

Has anyone ever been through a similar situation? Any advice? Id hate to get rid of one or both because they are like our children, but Im not sure what to do. HELP. TIA.

    I'm not so familiar with dogs, but we clicker trained our cats and it helped a lot with curbing aggressive behavior.

    If you google clicker training for dogs, it looks like there is a lot of info out there.
    IVF, acupuncture, meditation and a miracle.

    Does anything in particular seem to be causing the fights? Are they fighting over food or a treat? Are they playing with a toy and getting out of hand? If you can find what is triggering them, remove it. If you can't find anything, maybe consult a trainer.

    Oh man that is tough but like TJ said I figure out what is triggering the fights? Food being out, specify toys etc? I'd try to eliminate that first and if it can not be resolved I would have to get rid of a dog because I wouldn't want an accident to happen where they were fighting and the baby crawl over there and get hurt. My dog is my baby too so that is a super tough call. But they are hurting each other bad whih isn't typical behavior when dogs rough house. I hope you figure it out. I would be heart broken to get rid of one.

March 6th our little man was born. 

    6/17/13 - Ovidrel, Follistim, Prometrium ~ IUI #1 7/2 = BFP! March 17th our St. Pattys day baby arrived

    10/29/17 - Started process for IVF, got pregnant & miscarried a 2nd time since summer. 2/22 started stims - Menopur, Gonal F, Cetrotide - retrieval 3/6 - , PIO, estrace 3xday - FET 4/18 = Beta 1: 616; Beta 2: 1342 = BFP

    Honestly, my thought would be that unless something specific has caused it, maybe they are just trying to work out who is the "alpha" dog.  Our Gordon and Great Dane did this and then it stopped...
    IF DX: DOR & Fragile X pre-mutation carrier
    2011: FSH 13.3 & E 99; AMH 0.54 2nd FSH 6.2 E 40's AFC: 8
    BFP from Clomid/IUI ~ Pre-e and IUGR during pregnancy ~ DS born 9/4/12
    Feb./March 2013: AMH less than 0.16 (undectable) and AFC = 4;
    BFP from supps ~ DS#2 due May 2014

    Dog fights are so scary, especially with children in the home. Can you tell if they are fighting over something? Are they females? Males? One of each? Spayed/neutered?

    A couple tips for breaking up the fight safely: each adult grabs one dog from the back feet and pull them apart. Also, you can use a large piece of cardboard to drop down in between them. Just be very careful.

    Thanks ladies. I think the trigger is us. This last time I just got home and while I was checking the mail at the end of the driveway I heard their usual welcome home bark. Then I went into the house and heard them going at it in the back yard. I think my male dog didnt like that the female dog was barking at my coming home. It is probably an alpha dog thing. The fights are just really bad. Im worried for my kids if they accidently get involved and Im worried they will hurt each other more.

    Im taking the female to the vet today to check out her wound. Maybe they will have a list of trainers for me. Ugh. Why cant they just behave?!

    It sounds like they are just getting over-excited when you come home, and taking it out on each other. My parents had two dogs who did this. Definitely look into a behaviorist. APDT is a great resource: https://www.apdt.com/petowners/ts and try to find someone who doesn't use adverse methods.

    I have am a bit passionate about dog training and dog behavior, and try to help those I know. The first thing you can do, to keep them safe for now, is separate them from each other with a crate, x-pen, fence, etc. so that when you come home, they cannot go after each other. Safer for everyone and will save you a vet trip ;)

    @mdiblasi. Thanks so much. Great ideas. I think you are right about the excitement. As im typing this now they are napping in two separate crates. We will try anything.

    I broke up a dog fight with a punch in the face to the dog that was actively biting my beloved pooch. Both dogs were on leashes, however the owner of the aggressor failed to take action. But we are talking two small dogs and behavior that was not going to reoccur. 

    I echo training or separating. It is really hard to rehome dogs that have gotten in trouble for fighting.
