Babies: 6 - 9 Months

breastmilk amount at 6 months?

I'm curious how much breastmilk your LO is getting throughout the day?

I'm wondering if I should be giving my son more BM at daycare. He will be 6 months in a couple of weeks and he gets up for multiple feedings at night. I'm wondering if it's because I'm not feeding him enough during the day. I feed him before work around 6:30 am. I send 12oz of BM to daycare which he has been finishing completely. I'm trying to pump extra to send 15oz but I'm wondering if I should send more. I only have a few hours with him by the time I get home and he goes to bed so there's not much time for a lot of feedings.

Re: breastmilk amount at 6 months?

  • DS has been taking 15 oz. (3 five oz. bottles) since about 4.5 months, and I don't really see it increasing or decreasing it. DS1 took 15 oz. from when he was about 4 months until 12 months.

DS2 also nurses 4 times (morning, after daycare, before bed, once MOTN).

Is daycare saying he is hungry? If they are saying he is still satisfied, I don't think you need to send more. You could try to see if it helps with night wakings, but the night wakings could be habit at this point, or it may not make a difference. Have you or H tried comforting him in different ways during the night? There is also a 6 month growth spurt and a wonder week around that time that could be causing the wake ups.

No they haven't said anything but my mom and in-laws think he could use more. After he's done with the 4oz he's still trying to eat more. I guess I haven't tried soothing him in other ways. When he wakes up, I assume it's because he's hungry since he latches on like he's starving.
  • It's normal for EBF babies to eat in the MOTN. Plus he's probably going to have his 6 month growth spurt soon
  • DD takes3-4 4oz bottles while I'm at work.

same here, and she has since about 4 months.  She also nurses usually 3 times - once in the morning and twice in the evening. She doesn't usually eat in the MOTN...lately her sleep has been crazy and I have nursed in the middle of the night here and there but it's not the norm.

Our LO was drinking 3- 6 oz. bottles since about 4-5 months and still is (7 months on Sunday).  Thankfully he's eating solids now, otherwise that number probably would have increased even more.

  • Sorry three 6oz bottles.  (wouldn't let me edit and didn't think that was clear).  :)

  • On days I work, DD3 nurses morning, has 3 bottles during the day (4.5-5oz each), nurses evening and before bed. She also nurses anywhere from 2-5x overnight. She's going through this phase where she screams if I try to give her a paci and insists on sleeping with my nipple in her mouth. It's awesome.

Anyway, on days I'm home, she nurses anywhere from 6-8x during the day and the same amount overnight. She nurses on demand. I haven't noticed any correlation between how much she gets during the day and how often she wakes at night.

Oh, and for bottles I just send her whatever I pump that day. Every once and a while she gets a 4oz bottle because that's all I had. She's fine with that too.

  • Are the night wake ups a concern for you?  If you are okay with them then I would just continue as you have unless daycare is noting he is acting hungry (between feeds not immediately after a bottle).

Odds are babe is waking up to nurse to have contact with you since he missed you during the day.  If it isn't a huge disruption to your sleep then a quick nursing session allows him to be close to you.  If you are finding that the night feeds are really not working for you then you would be best to try and get more milk into him in the day so ensure he is getting his needs met over 24hrs.

As PP mentioned your milk is changing to meet his needs so the bottle amounts shouldn't really change as he ages.  There will be growth spurts etc...but your milk will adapt.

My pedi made me concerned about it. My pedi said at his 4 month appointment he should not be waking more than 2 times a night for a feeding. Since he wakes at least 3 times for a feeding she said I should cut it down to 2. Another pedi at the practice said that at his age he doesn't need night feedings. I tried to cut out a feeding but it doesn't work. He stopped using his pacifier and sucking his thumb so I turn on his mobile at night to soothe him but that doesn't help. When I pick him up to feed him, he latches on very quickly and eats for a long time which makes me think it's more for hunger than soothing. I'm wondering if maybe he's not getting enough during the day which is why he's making up for it at night.

I don't mind the one or two feedings at night but more than that makes it difficult to get through the day since I'm working full time.

  • We send three 4-oz bottles and also a 1 oz bottle to tide him over. He nurses 3ish times with me, too. He has been waking up for one MOTN feeding, but the past few nights has been STTN (knock on wood).

I wouldn't send more unless your baby seems hungry or unhappy. I already pump three times at work to get 13 oz for DS.... I would rather nurse him more at home than add a other pump! Bit if you really want to try, you could add just half an oz to each bottle.
