4 10's- Pros and cons

Hi All-
I may have the opportunity to work 4 10's with my job. The hours would be 7am- 6pm Monday- Thursday. My supervisor would like to send the proposal to her director today, so I wanted to get some quick feedback. Who works 4 10's? What do/don't you like? My husband works from home, so he would be able to help with pickup and drop off from school (My kids are 14, 5 and 11 months- the older 2 are in school) Plus my dad and aunt live close by and are always willing to help with the girls. The obvious biggest benefit would be having that extra day off with the baby and being able to volunteer in the girls schools- not to mention just the extra day to get things done :) Would love to hear your experiences-
Thank you!!

Re: 4 10's- Pros and cons

  • I work four 8 hr days, but I have a coworker who works three 10 hr days & she really likes having the other two days off.  I guess it depends on how different those hours are from what you're working now, plus commute time, etc.  If I had a long commute I don't know if it'd be worth it..  But maybe your Dh can start to get dinner on the table & you'll still have some time with your kids before bed.  I think it's a great idea & like you said, you'll have one day home with the baby & time to do stuff at the kids' school which is great.  I love working 4 days/week - I cherish my 3 day weekends & that extra day off to get shopping & stuff done!  GL with your decision.

  • I work 4/10's and they are long days. Since I pick up DD from daycare and they close at 6, I take a 1/2 hour lunch and leave work at 5:30. Otherwise, I have the same hours that you are talking about.

    Pros
    * extra day alone with DD
    * one less day of commuting (saves gas, if I stay home that day)
    * an extra day to do laundry & other tasks/errands
    * my day off is also time to meet friends for lunch and let our little ones play
    * don't need to take time off work for dr appts as I schedule them for day off

    Cons
    * DD is 7 months and ready to go to bed shortly after we arrive home, so I feel like I only see her on the weekends - not during the week
    * it's hard to plan activities with friends/family on weeknights, so weekends are full with your normal errands/task along with squeezing in family/friend time.

DH & I have talked about switching back to 5/8s. We have realized that by doing so, I would have less quality time with DD than on my current 4/10 schedule. We would wake up an hour later, so I would lose those 4 hours with her. Also, I would start having 1 hour lunches again and leave at 5, so I would only be gaining 1/2 hour with her each day during the week.

  • considering i work 5 11s i think 4 10s sounds great!  if i had the oppty to have one day off during the week i would definitely take it. it will take some time to adjust to the shorter evenings for you--but once you get into a routine i think you will appreciate one full weekday with your baby and to get some other things done.
  • I work 4 10s - 630-430. It is an amazing schedule for me. I love having the extra day during the week for laundry/errands and to spend with DD. Plus in my career it would be difficult to leave in 8 hours.

  • My DH worked a 9/80 schedule (every other Friday off) and I would never want him to work a 4/10 schedule.  The cons from being the parent who doesn't work the long days is that you are responsible for all of the morning, drop-offs, pick-ups, and dinner prep.  I sometimes have morning appointments or have to work late and I wouldn't be able to do that if he worked a 4/10 schedule.  When DH worked a 9/80 schedule he could take a 30 min lunch so he'd still be able to pick up at daycare.  At the very least, I'd ask to take a 30 min lunch or even to skip your lunch to make your days shorter.

  • Hi All-

Thank you so much for the helpful input- I love this board. mainerocks - I have put in my request for the 4 10's or possibly a 9/80 schedule (every other Friday off) My department is undergoing major changes so my supervisor wanted to have everyone's schedule requests in asap. One challenge with the 4 10's is that twice a week I have an hour commute each way- that being said, I would be gone almost 13 hours....I will keep you all posted as to how it turns out :) Thanks again!

  • My experience working 4-10s back in my early 20s was that it was exhausting. I'd spend the fifth day recovering. I got very little done any of those five days versus having productive evenings and early mornings. But it does work well for some!
