Outside time

I posted this in the working mom's board too, but even though I don't post here often, I do lurk a lot and I value y'all's opinions.

Is it reasonable for me to expect that DS should have outside playtime everyday, weather permitting of course, at day care?  Outside time is "scheduled" everyday, but sometimes when I pick him up they didn't go outside because:
  1. Not everyone brought a jacket
  2. It's too dark/cold/shady on the side of the building the play area is on
  3. They didn't get around to it today
My son loves to play outside and as we live in the deep south, we can swing it all year long. I was upset enough about this that I went and took a pregnancy test to rule out crazy-pregnancy-brain. I'm thinking of moving him someplace else, but I don't know that a new place would be any better. I just hate the thought that some days he never gets to leave the same room. Am I being nutty?

DS isn't in daycare but my niece is in Kindergarten and she almost never gets recess for the same reasons. I think her teacher just doesn't like going outside. It makes me sad for her sometimes especially on pretty days I'll ask and she'll say they didn't have time. I worked at a daycare for a little while after college and I made it a point to take my class out every day. Even when it was raining we had an indoor gym area we could go play in.

  • I live in FL and my sons daycare takes them out on the playground every day as long as it isn't raining. They even have separate playgrounds for each age group.
Same here.  We live in FL as well (which you know) and the weather is great.  At LO's DC they have two separate playgrounds, one for older kids and one for toddlers.  The teachers try to get them outside every day but there is a random day here and there where they do not go outside.  For the most part I would say they go outside 4 days a week.  I don't think you are crazy to expect them to take the kids outside. It is a nice way to break up the day and it gives the kids a change of scenery.  The weather has been great the last couple of weeks so I really don't believe that there is a valid reason for them not to go outside at all.  I think you should talk with the teacher and the director about the situation.  Maybe Dimitri could go outside with another class if his class is not going out that day?

  • At Jack's daycare they seem to have some outdoor time everyday except for extremely wet weather. They even have a little balcony bit over some of the yard so that if it's light-moderate rain they can do some playing outside under that.

They also have a tub of spare clothing size 00(6months)-2 (years) so if a child needs some item of clothing they can normally find something in that.
  • Thanks for letting me know I'm not crazy!  When I pick him up today I'm going to talk to the teacher.  I hate confrontation.
