When to tell the boss?

Hello fellow Seattle bumpies :)

I am FTM and just hit the 12 week mark.  I am curious when you all told your boss you were pregnant.  I work from home, so it seem less relevant to tell my boss sooner rather then later.  Are there benefits/reasons to telling your boss sooner?  Did it give you more time to understand your works policies regarding maternity leave?  When did you decide to spill the news?

Thanks for your input!

Re: When to tell the boss?

  • I feel like it is good to tell your boss when you are confident with your pregnancy.  For me, that was after my first obgyn appointment where I had a good ultrasound.  I found my boss was very understanding about the appointments that I needed to go to in order to check the pregnancy.

But kinda funny, with my second pregnancy, my daughter, I thought I was due in August.  And I went to my first obgyn appointment.  And they told me that the baby was too big for their ultrasound.  So I had to go for a more advanced ultrasound at another place later that week.  I ended up being due at the beginning of June instead.  I sit right by my boss.  I guess no one noticed my bump because it was winter time, and I wearing sweaters.  I told my boss, and then I stood up and showed my bump.  She was actually surprised that I was that far along.

So I would say as early as after your first official appointment at the obgyn that you have a good ultrasound with a heartbeat, but no later than the 20 week ultrasound where your bump starts to show.

It was good for me to have the paperwork available and understand my company's policies.

  • I also work from home and my company is so small that I was the first employee to get pregnant, so they needed to create a maternity policy. I told them shortly after my 12 week ultrasound. I think they appreciated the advance notice for planning purposes.

  • Thank you all for your responses.  It's nice to hear how you all did it.  I decided to tell my boss this week - I'm 13 weeks.  I have gotten 2 ultrasounds and everything seems to be progressing normally, so I figured it was a good time.  It also will help me plan with my boss around time off, etc.
  • I am about to walk into a new job next week and I will be 16 weeks pregnant.  I am very nervous to tell them and have been trying to find dresses to cover me properly... I am having twins so I am showing a bit more.  Hoping to wait 2-3 weeks and then break the news.  Nervous!
  • I told my boss around 12-13 weeks or so.  I didn't have my first appointment+u/s until I was 10 weeks.

  • I didnt tell until i was 20 weeks, saw no reason to tell any sooner... But everyone tells when they are ready...

Started TTC in 2006, LOTS of trying, and trying, and 7 rounds of IVF with 13 embryos, 2 perfect little boys and 5 loses....
All finished with babies, started to make diet changes, Keto, to be MORE for my kids, lost 30 pounds, still going, and 3 months in, I had a natural cycle, and then ovulated... Hubs and I are going to see what happens now... Maybe a natural pregnancy? After everything we have been through? Or just a return to normal hormones? We shall see what the future holds!

  • I'm lucky. My boss is super supportive and I had no hesitation telling her as soon as I knew. It was a good thing I did because I was out of the office a lot due to morning sickness and other complications.

    Good Luck!
