Baby Weight Gain - Big Babies?

For those of you that had big LOs at birth, did your LO's weight gain stay consistent, or did it ever taper off?

My LO was 9 lb 4 oz at birth, so a fairly big guy.  But now, at 15 weeks, he's just a little over 14 lbs!  He seems right in the average range for his age, but he's moved from the top percentiles down to the mid range.

This happen to anyone else?  TIA!

  • My DS was 10lbs. He dropped a lot of weight in the first month due to unsuccessful breastfeeding, then has recently gone off the charts. At his 4 month checkup, he was 18lbs and 27in long. He doesn't actually look chunky (and really didn't at birth either) since he's really long and proportionate.

  • Georgia was 9 lb 3 oz (21.5 " long) at birth.  She has been a bit on the slow side to gain....but I think part of it is just her build KWIM?  She is long & lean, with very petite little hands & feet.

She was 14 lb 5 oz at 4 months, and 26" long.  We go to the Dr on Wednesday for her 5 month, I am anxious to see what she is now....

  • Mine's about the same for weight...she's between 14-15lbs according to our scale. She's still pretty long though, about 25 inches. She was 9lbs 4oz at birth too.
  • DS was 8lbs 11oz at birth and 22 inches(induced a week early).  at 4 months he was 18lbs and 27 inches so he is still in the 90-ish % for both height and weight, he does not look chunky though, he is just big all around
  • At birth DS was over 98% in all 3 measurements.  At 2 months he was between 90 - 95% for all 3, and at 4 months he was 90% for length and head and 75% for weight . . . So yeah, he's definitely tapering off.  Pedi said it's totally normal and told us from the very beginning that an extremely large newborn doesn't necessarily stay extremely large.

  • My little Owen was born at 11lbs 14oz, 21.5inches.  He was just checked for weight and height at 22 months and is now 29.5lbs, 35inches.  Percentiles are 87 & 89 %
  • All of my kids were decent size at birth (8.5-9.5 lbs) and they are all towards the bottom of the growth charts at their respective ages now. My oldest is 7 and about the size of a large 4 year old, she started dropping percentages at around a year. My middle is 5 and is pretty average sized but she was huge until about 3 (42" at 3 years old). My 3rd started dropping percentiles early. She was 8.5 lbs at birth and 17 lbs at a year. At 2 she teeters between 19 and 21 lbs. every big baby isn't meant to be a big kid.
  • My little girl was 10 pounds, 6 ounces at birth and 22.5 inches long.  She is now 10 months old, weighs only 20 pounds and is 31 inches long.  She is and always has been extremely healthy, so I definitely wouldn't worry!
  • My son was born 10lbs 1.7 oz and 21'' long. His last appointment (4 month check up) He was almost 17lbs and 27'' long. I thought he was on the chunky side but his pedi says for his height he is actually long and lean.
  • Dd was 8.9 at birth and 19.3 lbs at 4 1/2 months. She's ebf and just a chub. And 22 inches

  • My son was 8.4 lbs & gained consistently but was never off the charts for weight but was for height...hes very tall but my DD was 5.12 lbs@birth then dropped to 5.3 lbs but at her 4 month she was over 14 lbs. But that still was about 30%. She's pretty long. She's 5 months now & is wearing 6-12 month clothes so I'm not worried. As long as she's gaining.

  • My daughter was born at 8 lbs 13 oz and 22 in long. (my husband is 6'5")  at 2 months she was 13 lbs 11 oz and 25 inches long, 4 months 17lbs 5 oz 27 inches long, and 6 months 20lbs 7 oz 28 inches long.  She is wearing 9-12 months clothes.
  • My DD was born at 7lbs. and 6 oz.  This week at her 4 month appointment, she weighed in at 16 lbs. and 4 oz.  That's 90th percentile for her age.  But at her 2 month appointment, she was weighing in at 96%.  There has been a definite slowdown in weight gain, but she's still holding her own.

  • My DS was 9lbs 15oz at birth. He dropped to 9lbs 2oz and gained that back in just over a week. Ever since then he slowly drops percentiles. At just over 15 weeks he's about 14.5lbs. So he went from 98th percentile to around the 50th. My doc hasn't had an issue with the dropping of percentiles because it's been over time. He did not drop from 98th to 50th in just one month. It's been gradual.

Ds was born at 9 pounds 8oz and 21 3/4 inches. He has continued to be a bigger boy. At his 4 month appointment this past week he was 21 pound 12 oz and 28 inches. So in our case he continues to be big. However his doctor says he should average out around 6 to 12 months as dh and I are average size.

Every baby is different. I wouldn't be concerned until our doctor became concerned.
  • My son was born 6 lbs 15oz three weeks early. He's just at 14 weeks and he's almost 16lbs!
