1st Trimester

Are you eating healthy or eating what you want? (Kudos if the two are synonymous for you.)

Pre-pregnancy, I totally planned to eat all this lean protein and steamed veggies.

Now, I'm effing RAVENOUS. I want all the food. Normally, I'd eat 75% of a salad and be good. Last night, I woofed down a bacon and swiss burger and a side of steamed broccoli and could have gone for a second round.

I'm not a small person -- I kick around the size 12 area -- so I don't "need" to gain much during pregnancy. But I feel like I'd die if I tried to eat as healthy as I did before. I.e. it seems like my body is just burning through whatever I eat anyway.

  • I try to eat a well rounded diet, for me that means indulging in my cravings and making sure I also get fruits and veggies. Last night for dinner I had cheese pizza and an apple. The other night I had homemade potato skins and steamed broccoli....I eat a lot of random foods these days :) I try not to stress about it, I eat when I'm hungry and I eat what sounds good (morning sickness rules out different foods each day, the other day all I could eat was apples and peanut butter).

  • When I found out I was pregnant I went grocery shopping and stocked up on all these healthy foods. Then morning sickness "all day sickness" hit and I was just trying to eat anything that I could stomach.

  • I'm mostly eating what I want, but being a little more careful to get all my veggies in. However I have mostly lost my sweet tooth, which has helped me eat a better in general.

It varies a lot from day to day. Some days I feel like I can't stop eating. Others I have three pretty light meals. One day all I can stand is carbs (pasta, doughnuts, PB&J), another all I want is meat.

I figure my body pretty much knows what it needs.

Yeah, sweets went out the window pretty fast, which I really appreciate. It does make eating healthy way easier.

I've never been a "trust my body" kind of person. I.e. I have a tendency to gain weight and overeat, so I've always had to be a pretty mindful, conscientious person to manage my weight. But I don't want to spend my pregnancy worrying about that; BUT I DO want to be healthy. So it's kind of confusing/difficult.

  • I try to, I do a good job eating my fruits, veggies are hit or miss and some days the baby just needs me to eat half a pizza for dinner and the leftovers for breakfast, hahaha!

  • i try to eat healthy but normally i just give into my cravings and i have found that i eat often just not a lot at one time.  I am still at my pre-pregnancy weight so i must be doing something right.
  • I ate ridiculously healthy before and thought I would continue that way.  Not so much (although not terrible) for the past few weeks, but I'm getting more tolerant of veggies again.  I bought the premade Green Goddess juice drink which is a relatively easy way to get the veggies in when all i want is soft pretzels and I'm too lazy to make my own green smoothie.  Everyone I talk to says your normal healthy appetite will return so I"m rolling with it.
  • I eat pretty healthy normally, but I'm already finding myself eating more than normal. I am ravenous. I went to bed last night and had to wake up and eat a piece of string cheese to quell the hunger pains.

I am trying to eat well from the get go since I had GD with my last pregnancy.

  • I try to eat healthy and do for the most part, but my sugar cravings are bad lately!
  • I'm not doing too well here.  I'm not vomiting but there's a lot I can't stomach the thought of eating (meat and some other heavy foods), so I've been really like bagels and cream cheese, pasta, rice...basically empty carbs.  It's all very strange because prior to getting pregnant I was a very healthy eater - tofu twice a week, salads, lean proteins, no fried food during week, veggie side dish every night etc (I also had my gallbladder removed this year so I was really mindful of fatty food).  I used to love vegetables, now I can't stomach the sight of them so I try and sneak them in through soups and such.

I'm forcing myself to eat a yogurt now (for digestive/vag health, lol), and I try to at least have a serving of fruit every day.  I've been drinking a ton of juice too to try to help make up for the vitamins I'm losing by not eating as many veggies as I'd like.

  • Try your best to stay healthy, but indulge a bit when you feel a craving.

Before becoming pregnant I had the biggest sweet tooth and now that i'm 7 wks, my cravings have stopped.  I eat 1-2 servings of fruit and veggies a day, lots of protein, but I do like my snacks when I watch tv at night.  My goal is to not gain any weight except 1-2 pounds this first trimester and I weigh myself every week, if not daily, to make sure i'm on track.

  • I started out with the first, but slowly have been doing more of the second.  Here lately, it has been nothing but the second...ate pei wei last night and a bunch of Halloween candy this morning for breakfast.  Yes, I totally have to get a grip for the health of the baby and so I don't gain a ton.

  • I'm trying to eat healthier but if I'm craving something, I'm gonna eat it :) I've cut out caffeine drinks. That's a big deal for me.

  • I force feed myself at least 2 fruits a day and try to eat veggies if possible. But my cravings are bad. Once I get one if I don't eat it everything taste like shit and makes me feel sick.

To off set this I just try to watch how much of, whatever it is I am craving, I am eating.

  • I am 6 weeks and 4 days. I haven't had any cravings yet, just major food aversions. Luckily the aversions include salty, sweet and greasy foods.

I keep track of my diet on my fitbit app and seem to be right around where I was before in was pregnant. I am eating much healthier, but still about the same number of calories.
  • I try to do pretty well.  A huge pet peeve of mine is when women just stuff themselves when pregnant.  I mean I eat cheeseburgers once in a while too, but for the most part I try to get in more veggies, fruits, oatmeal, eggs, nuts, etc.  I still eat what I want but I am more careful.  I too am a size 10/12 and my last pregnancy I was really good an only gained 15 pounds.  I worked out about 5-6 hours a week and was conscious about my food.  I gained good weight, not extra weight, and my doctor was happy with my weight gain.  But, I found there were some weeks I was just hungrier than others.  IT is probably your body adjusting!

  • I had been cutting out processed foods before I got pregnant and now I have a great reason to stick to it! You can still indulge in most cravings without being unhealthy. Just look for products that are organic and don't have any artificial additives (ESPECIALLY dyes). I have never been a morning person and drag myself out of bed with ten minutes to get ready, so my breakfasts always have to be on the go. I've been doing fruit and whole wheat crackers and am going to start adding a smoothie.
