Special Needs

question please!

Hey everyone..its been a while since I posted here but I have a concern with my 8yr old son. He was diagnosed ADHD/low functioning Autistic a year and a half ago. After months of figuring out which meds/doses work for him, he has been doing great! His school work was getting done, everything wasn't a huge fight with the defiance, I didn't have to ask him to do things 5 times..and he had a sense of feeling calm and "normal".
Well he seems to have changed a little bit in the last month at school. Not really at home but just at school. His teacher called a few days ago and expressed her concerns how he is not doing his school work. He will just sit there and refuse to do it, he doesn't give her any snark about it, he just sits there and watches everything around him. If the activity is physical activity then he's quick to be onboard with that but its the pencil to paper he's having issues with. I believe he has some anxiety issues too and she also expressed that he's almost afraid to speak out in class in fear of being wrong. I feel very sad for him, he has such a beautiful little soul but I'm worried.
Have any of you experienced a change in your children like this? He was doing so well and all of the sudden he just doesn't want to do much. Nothing has changed, his meds have been the same for months..nothing has changed at home.
Any input would be appreciated, I just want to help him.

Re: question please!

  • I honestly don't know what term he was diagnosed with as far as his autism. He reads at a higher level than his peers and the sentences that come out of his mouth surprise me..as in 'you're only 8, how do you know that??' He's been reading his dictionary every night, even when his meds have worn off. He is on 27mg Concerta. We were going to try the Straterra but I read up on the side effects and he had already had a bad reaction to Aderall (became almost suicidal, I had to take him to the ER) so I opted no on that drug.
I am thinking he may be either a. Not being challenged enough or b. the meds are no longer working and he needs a higher dose.
He had a dr appt this afternoon and he's playing Minecraft right now, he is not nearly as calm as he used to be. He's constantly talking, making noises, humming etc. there's definitely been a big change in him now that I've thought about what you suggested.
