Insomnia... What do you do?

About once or twice a week I wake up at 4-4:30 and just can't get back to sleep. I usually get up to pee every few hours a night but at one point I just can't get back to sleep.
So now it's hit again and I usually get up and go on the couch to watch some true crime show.
What do you do?

Re: Insomnia... What do you do?

  • I typically try for about an hour to go back to sleep and if that doesn't work I her up and watch TV. Typically I try to watch something calm that may put me back to sleep.
  • Loading the player...
  • I wake up early and can't go back to sleep every so many days too. I usually lay in bed and read the news on my phone.
  • I turn on the tv with a sleep timer with the volume really low, just something to distract my mind. Sometimes I even leave it on the Disney channel because I know it won't hold my attention or scare me ;). I can usually fall back asleep in 30-45 minutes.

    It's usually 2 or 3:30 when I wake up.

  • For some reason, when I wake up like that, if I try and read or watch TV, then I have no chance of falling back asleep.  Usually I kick DH out of bed (regardless of if it's his fault that I woke up or not, sorry honey) and try to take up as much space as possible in the cooler part of the bed.  Using an icepacks or turning my fan up has helped, too.

  • I usually move down to the guest room and read - for some reason the change of atmosphere works better than just laying there and trying to sleep. I also think that telling myself I'm reading instead of "trying" to sleep is more conducive to actually sleeping.
  • I have this problem, I'll go to sleep at 11pm and I wake up between 2-3am then I'll fall back asleep around 6-7am and sleep until noon, then sometimes I'll fall asleep in the afternoon, I just can't sleep for more than 4-5 hours straight, it is mainly caused from pain in back, not getting comfy, and having to pee really bad! I'm starting to get really aggravated by this sleep schedule!
  • I have this problem, usually a few times per week, too.  I find it frustrating because I'm not anxious or anything, just wide awake.  I usually lay there for as long as possible without turning on phone or tv (because those will just keep me up and the tv will wake DH) and if I really can't fall back asleep, I will play relaxing nature sounds on YouTube on my phone (with headphones in so I don't bother DH).  And weirder than that, there are videos with people talking in soothing voices on youtube.  It's a bit creepy, but it works.

  • Unisom...I take it for my nausea, but of course it helps with sleeping too. I've had off and on insomnia throughout my pregnancy. With the unisom, you can take a full or half pill and you still wake up in the middle of the night some, but for me it helps me fall back asleep again and stay in a deeper sleep.
  • I take Benadryl but still wake up to lee and am usually up for a couple hours. I do the worst thing and that's go and dink around on Pinterest etc on my phone. It doesn't help.

  • I try and try to fall back asleep. Usually it's within an hour or two of my alarm going off or I would take Unisom or Benadryl. If I took either of those there wouldn't be a chance i'd be getting up!
  • Take a warm bath, or turn on a heating pad and put it on my legs or pillow. ( it self turns off)
  • Thanks for the suggestions. Usually I get up to pee and then my nose sarts running, or gets completely clogged and I can't breath. It's sooo frustrating! lol
  • My insomnia window is from 3 - 5am ish, and I have it a couple times/week.  I usually pee, sometimes eat a snack if I'm starving, sometimes go into another cooler room, but always try to avoid talking online.  If I start interacting (responding to email, answering posts on the Bump, etc.) the insomnia lasts longer.  The safest bet is usually Pinteresting.  I pick a category I'm only partially interested in, scan it for a while, and then fall back to sleep.

  • I put on one of my nap time movies. I have a few different movies that I have seen a million times and now they always put me to sleep, it worked for me last night.
