Preemies

New Here

Hello!  Just found this discussion board.  My son was born at 34 weeks and is now 13 weeks old.  He was in the NICU for 2 weeks.  I find myself comparing him a lot with what 3 month olds are suppose to be doing and forget that he's developmentally not there yet!  Hoping this preemie group will help!

Also, how do I get a ticker with his gestational age and actual age?

  • Welcome! I try not to think about when DD should be hitting milestones & just go with the flow. It helps that I only know babies older than her so I don't have anyone to compare her to. But just remember he'll do everything when he's ready. My ticker is from lilypie.com.

  • Welcome! I also have a 34 weeker.. He's 4 months now and I also struggle with the comparison game and milestone worry. It's hard but it helps to talk to the doc, he always keeps me in check when he's not concerned as he's meeting his adjusted milestones just fine!
  • Congrats on your baby!

  • Welcome! My daughter's story is exactly like yours. She's now 11 weeks. Like everyone said, I try to go with the flow and know she'll do things on her own time. It's certainly tough though.
  • Welcome! How is your LO doing?

Our Angel Patricia born sleeping 3/30/12 at 31 weeks
Our Fighter Anna born early 1/8/13 at 26 weeks
Hoping to bring home #3 due 9/9/15
  • My 34weekers were in the NICU for 2 weeks also. I know we have to be patient for them to hit milestones, but it's hard for me not to compare them to their older brother - and even each other. I just keep telling myself they are their own little people and will do things at their own pace.

(Also, this seems silly, but I've stayed on my BMB for their due date instead of actual birth month. They're much closer to that developmentally and it makes me feel better. Silly, I know)

  • Thanks for the warm welcome! It helps having others that are going through the same things. My baby is doing great. He eats great and lifts his head...very strong! Early intervention came and he didn't qualify which is good. Still waiting for that smile...I think that's the hardest part! He also has reflux that wakes him up constantly and the medications prescribes by pedi has not helped at all.
  • Congratulations and Welcome to the board!

  • Congrats and welcome!

My 30-weeker is 3mos actual/3.5 weeks adjusted and I also struggle with remembering that she's not quite ready to be hitting those milestones.

@shayna80, my dd has reflux too and the dr recommended 1tsp of rice cereal per ounce of formula in a bottle. It hade a HUGE difference when we started that and spit ups have become very minimal now. Just wanted to share :)
  • What size nipple to you use with the rice cereal? I have found that if I make it too thick then it won't come out. He's on slow flow right now.

We started with level 2 (we use Dr Browns) and have lately been using level 3 bc she seems to be handling it well. Prior to this we'd been using slow flow as well.
