Special Needs

Well, that was disappointing.

edited November 2013 in Special Needs
We had Our ADOS today. They stuck us in a tiny room that easily has to be 80 degrees and we waited for 40 minutes. Three people finally came in--the doctor and two interns and she was already pissed off by the time they came in. Dd was literally beat red and dripping with sweat--she totally shut down because she's overly sensitive to being hot. I was sweating and I had a thin long sleeved shirt on--poor kid had sweatshirt and sweatpants on. The whole time she was saying no, go even when they brought out her most favorite activities. She got stuck on playing with play doh likely in an attempt to regulate herself and even I couldn't get her to play which never happens. I was hoping she'd underperform so they'd get a glimpse of the bad days but it was not even close to being a representation of how she is. I was kind of glad because it will help her get more services but I feel like now I'm not really going to get an accurate answer. Sigh.

  • That sounds horrible! I am sorry! Will they you reschedule? Did they already give you the results?

They didn't really say anything. I have to wait until mid December for results. They asked me if this was representative of how she normally was and I said definitely not.

  • I didn't send any paperwork prior (the Vineland and gars were administered by the psych). The neurodevelopmental pedi saw two different kids though. At 25 months she had a good appointment. She sat with the intern for 90 minutes and played dolls/kitchen/tea party. At the last appointment, she spun in circles, put animal figurines on the table and pushed them off. At the first appointment she couldn't stop raving about how well developed joint attention and pretend play was. At the second appointment she couldn't get her to respond or make eye contact besides when she told her no to an activity she didn't want to participate in. So pretty much no one has seen a "typical" day. It's likely going to be confusing when the ADOS turns back severely autistic and my reports come back not autistic. I'm probably going to look like a crazy mother. Ha. The sabotage theory makes sense. During part of the testing dd came over to me crying and I mentioned she was sweating and very uncomfortable. The test administrator said sorry but didn't offer to move us or even to turn on the fan in the room.
