Not enough milk..what's your opinion?

Yesterday I went for a massage so H watched C. He gave her two bottles of 4oz. each. When I got home my boobs weren't even a little full feeling but I pumped anyway to keep my supply. I got less than 1 oz. Last night c slept from 7pm until 2 which is thelongest she's ever gone.do you think it was just a coincidence or do you think maybe I am not making enough milk in the evenings for her to sleep well at night

Re: Not enough milk..what's your opinion?

  • Not really but I am able to pump a few ounces in the morning so I could try and pump in The morning to feed her at night and then pump once she is asleep to up my nighttime supply and fee her the next day.

  • I don't think it's a coincidence .. My girl eats all day every couple hours 5 oz or so and before bed she likes a couple of bottles and she will STTN. I would try it again tonight!

  • so I KNOW i don't produce enough for S to just eat off of me, but for us, it doesn't matter. The amount I've pumped, say from 1pm to 4pm vs what S has eaten in from me in that same period as determined via weighed feeding is so drastically different, I can't even begin to compare. I can pump less than an ounce after 3 hours, but she gets 3 oz off of me when she eats. The other night, we gave her an additional 2 oz bottle when she woke up at 10:30 and she got up again 3 hours later. The night before that, we didn't give her the additional bottle and she slept for over 5 hours, both with the same number of oz before she went to bed. They're so random, I've given up trying to equate any rhyme or reason to what they do.

  • I have had to go to bottles at night before bed to make sure she's full. I produce enough but she is distracted! I do 6-7 ounces before bed and it definitely helped her sleep.

  • I am going through this too. I started giving her 5 oz formula before bed and she had been sleeping 7-8 hours straight without waking up. It's the longest she has slept in a month without waking. I am the same as you in the morning, not at all engorged. I have been taking milk supplements, drinking lots, pumping once in MOTN and nothing has helped. I am still able to keep her satisfied in the day time however she eats every couple hours.

  • Thanks for the input. We have introduced solids and she eats everything but I'm trying not to give her too much since I don't want her cutting out milk feeding. Bah babies are hard.

  • I don't think it is a coincidence. From 2 weeks on, I have pumped so DH could feed one bottle at bedtime. In my case, he was falling asleep while nursing and not getting enough. He was sleeping 4 plus hours by 3 weeks and sleeping 10 plus hours by 6 weeks. I 100% attribute it to making sure he got a full bottle at bedtime.

  • Well I'll try to get her to takes bottle after I feed her but she just hate staking bottles from me. I'll just work on upping my evening supply

Yup, my problem too. Not just at night but anytime. LO hates taking bottles from me. Looks at me like I am nuts. DH can usually do it for me.

  • I wouldn't drink a bottled beer if I could get it on tap.
    Amen

  • Also remember that babies can get more out of the breast that we can get pumping for the same duration. You might have only pumped an ounce but she might be getting more from you when she feeds directly. Also, my LC always told me that not feeling engorged doesn't necessarily mean you're not producing enough milk.

That's not to say she wouldn't sleep better with more. Any chance of doing a weighed feeding to test things out?

Also, I'd drink beer on tap, from a bottle, in a dixie cup, whatever. As long as it's dark and in my mouth, I'm happy. Also, that's what she said.
