tricycle or balance bike?

Hello, visiting from the 12-24 month board.  I'm looking to get DS a bike for his 2nd birthday in January and can't decide if I should get a tricycle or a balance bike.  Any thoughts and opinions from your own experience?

Re: tricycle or balance bike?

  • We have a tricycle for DS1 (almost 2.5), and he loves it. He hasn't quite figured out how to use the pedals yet, but he tries often. When he isn't trying, he pushed himself around with his feet on the ground.

  • We actually have both for our 27 month old daughter. We bought the 3 in 1 conversion tricycle for her for her 1st birthday. She doesn't really understand pedaling. It's sort of a waste, but we still use it randomly. She just can't figure out pedaling even when I try to assist.

We bought the balance bike for her 2nd birthday and she loves that it looks like a "big bike." I thought that this too was going to be a waste of money, she would walk on it, but never attempted to get momentum. But just this week, she started gaining speed and lifting both her feet off the ground. She's been able to keep them up for 1-2 seconds and is super proud of herself. It's really cool.

I asked this question a couple months ago and got some good responses from people. We ended up buying a Kazam balance bike (using a 20% off coupon at TRU) but it will be a Christmas gift so I can't give a review on it yet. We have the 3-in-1 trike but it doesn't get much use so I'm hoping the balance bike will be a bigger hit.

  • I think if you are going the balance bike route, both are a good idea.  Trike to teach pedaling and balance bike to teach balance--and then no training wheels.  We got DD1 a trike for Christmas last year when she was 15m--she didn't really start using it until she was about 20m this past summer.  She knows how the pedals are supposed to move, but doesn't have it down yet.  We are getting her a balance bike for this Christmas.

  • We got my son a balance bike for Christmas, so no reports on it yet, but he has the Rock n Roll tricycle by Fisher Price and there are tricycles at his preschool.  He is 25 months and still can't pedal them because he's too short.

  • My son just turned 3. We loved his stryder balance bike. He can cruise on it now on an adult bmx track, having never seen anyone else ride on a track. I'm pretty amazed by it. He is definitely ready for a big boy bike without training wheels and will be getting one in the spring. Honestly, the bike just made balance effortless and second nature. It didn't hurt that the bike was under 7 pounds...

Never needed a tricycle in our house. He did fine using one at someone else's house for the first time. I honestly don't feel that tricycles are necessary and think they teach bad habits when it comes to balance. Pedaling is the easy part.
