Breast feeding and rhumatoid arthritis

Anyone else out there dealing with RA symptoms coming back?
Through out my pregnancy I felt great, no symptoms at all, I was told I would go into remission. It was great, no need for any meds at all. I was told it would come back between weeks 4-6 pp..... Well I think it's back. I don't want to stop breastfeeding, and I want to be able to pump once I go back to work. Not sure I can deal with the pain that comes with RA. Anyone experience this? What did you do?

  • What medicine do you usuallytake? Is it not bf friendly?

  • Under the breast feeding thread that @AmyG* started, there is a link to a website that tells you how safe the med is you want to take for bf.

  • I took plaquinil ( hydroxychlorquin) and meloxicam. Big no no on meloxicam, that was an anti-inflammatory and the plaquinil was an immune suppressor both found in breast milk. I'm thinking I might be able to get away with taking ibuprofen. But I'm not sure how long / how affective it will be.

I'm not so much worried about what I can take, I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this and what worked for them. Thanks for the link @HFrizzle
  • I have Lupus and have taken plaquenil through both of my pregnancies and breastfeeding. My rheumatologist, OB, and pediatrician are all okay with it. Might be worth asking about.
  • Plaquenil should be okay for breastfeeding. I'm avoiding it, but it never really helped me much. I actually have Lupus. The whole reason I want to breastfeed is to get healthy antibodies for my baby nice and young. I am also dreading the day my symptoms come back; I am 2 weeks PP.

  • @Jalee85 I was diagnosed with RA about 3 years ago, plaquenil was the first drug they prescribed, brought down the swelling in my hands drastically. It helped me a lot. No swelling yet, just pain in various joints in the morning especially. Going to stick with some ibuprofen until I talk to my doctor. Hopefully it takes it's time to fully comeback! ( for you too!)

Will talk to my dr, thanks for weighing in!
  • Thank you @AmyG* good information. I was hesitant to restart my meds, I still don't have my symptoms back, mainly hand swelling and pain. The last couple of days I have felt like a truck hit my whole body. Thought I would put this topic out there to see how others deal with it. I will have to talk to my dr when I see him next, no point on suffering and making myself miserable while taking care of my LO.
  • It's just my back, legs, hands joints basically. No fever, breast are not hard, red or tender. I looked at the symptoms of mastitis previously so I would know what to look for.
