we'll be going on a cruise soon and i want to know what to bring for LO. the room is a tight fit and i want to bring little as possible, but want to bring what's absolutely important of course. thanks
I can't offer any advice, but I was wondering what cruise line you are going on. I think we'd like to try to do something like this soon with DS, but want to do it on a ship that might offer better accommodations/activities/sitting for babies. I know Disney CL is great for this, but wondered what other lines people have looked into.
We took DD on Norwegian when she was 2.5. I know Disney is good too, but I think childcare isn't free if they're under 3. Norwegian is all free, but they don't change diapers. They'll just call you to come and do it yourself. The kiddie area was great and there were tons of things to do, with and without parents.
Ok, see if you can have them set up a pack and play in your room so you don't have to bring one. We got a bigger room so there'd be room for that. A balcony is good too, since your LO will go to bed earlier and you and your SO will want to be able to talk and move around after they're asleep. Also make sure your cabin has a tub. Keep in mind most cruise ships won't allow babies in the pools unless they're potty trained for sanitary reasons, so make sure to check up on that.
As for what to bring, we brought a few smaller toys, some coloring books, a small computer with a DVD player, and some books. Really we were out and about most of the time and not in the room much, so there wasn't much in terms of play toys. We spent a lot of time out by the pool - or the kiddie water play area, and just exploring the ship. Norwegian has a deal with Nickeloden, so Dora was everywhere. They had tons of activities catered to little ones, a dance party, arts and crafts, even a character breakfast. 2 years later DD still talks about having breakfast with Dora! We brought diapers and swim diapers, and a small cheapo umbrella stroller. Lots of meet and greets with the characters. There were movies and tons of stuff for DD to do.
I'm thinking of doing a cruise with DD in Jan or Feb. So I don't have any advice yet but I want to follow this post.
I have travelled with DD to a warmer climate, and I brought lots of shorts and t-shirts and they don't take up much space. It's so much better than packing for trips in cold places . At least two sunhats ... and lots of swim diapers are a must
Bring things like sunscreen from home because they charge you extra at tourist destinations and probably on the cruise ship.
We are going on one in March. Check out the Family boards on Cruise Critic. They have a ton of great info.
Be sure to bring extra diapers and wipes, sippy cups, and dish soap to wash the sippy cups in. Plenty of sunscreen, hats, medicine (just in case your LO gets sick) plus all the usual clothing attire for the beach/ pool. We plan on bringing a smaller stroller that will fit in a corner in our room. Request a pack n play so you don't have to bring yours.
We took our LO on one in June (10 mo). First to those asking. Don't do Carnival. I was okay with paying for childcare but it was SO restricted we couldn't even go ashore. We tried one night to go to a show. They called us to pick up.
OP- have you requested a crib? We took a flat twin sheet in a dark color to help drape and block light. A small kiddie pool (2 in deep) bc they can't be in the big pool area. Lots of sunscreen, 2 hats, a couple of swim suits, a small umbrella stroller, snacks and a couple of cups. I took a bottle cleaning brush and a small travel container of dawn dish soap. Bath toys and plenty of diapers/wipes.
We packed full outfits in ziploc bags labeled with day. 1 day/1 evening and several back up. We packed almost double and used them all.

When I was researching cruises awhile back, I could have sworn that a lot of cruise lines don't allow kids in the pool under a certain age even with swim diapers? Maybe I am wrong about that?
We took dd1 to Alaska on Norwegian at 13 months and she did great. I just packed clothing in layers, (i do tge outfit per ziplock then a back of sweatgers, etc.). We used their PNP, it fit next to our bed despite having an inside cabin. I took one sippy and a few toys, an umbrella stroller for port. Oh, and the plastic bags to dispose of diapers just to help our room not smell. But they cleaned twice a day so diapers never sat long.
One thing, a women came up to me in the middle of a sea day asking for diapers because her daughter got diarrhea and blew through theirs and they had a hard time finding more, especially at sea. So pack (buy in departure port) more than you would normally use since changes in food and water can mess with bellies.
Ditto the cc family board. I enjoyed reading others' advice.
