Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Starting first foods

DD is 5 months and wants more than just formula so bad. She is on Alimentum because of a possible allergy to milk. I tried the rice cereal and around 2 hours after eating it she would spit it all up. So, I bought some first foods and she loved it! I decided to try the cereal again today and she instantly spit it up. Since being on Alimentum she hardly ever spits up, so I know for sure the cereal is what she's spitting up. My question is, could she be allergic to the cereal or is her stomach just not liking it?

Re: Starting first foods

  • I can't help you with the spit up/allergy situation but I can say that I tried cereal with my baby and she got so constipated. So we decided to just skip the cereal and just go right to the fruits and veges (which she loves). There really isn't any nutritional value to rice cereal so she isn't missing much without it. Maybe talk to your pedi if you're really concerned :)

  • Are we talking rice cereal?  Rice allergies are rare (one of the reasons it's a great first food) but it's not impossible.  You don't need to feed cereal at all so since it seems she may have a sensitivity to it, I'd just stop it.

  • With my 5 1/2 month old twins we decided to start with oatmeal instead of rice cereal. Gerber makes a very fine grain oatmeal. It is less likely to cause constipation and there is that whole arsenic in rice issue that concerns me. My boys didn't love the plain oatmeal  but ate it much better with a little first food mixed in. Maybe try that and see if it makes a difference.

  • What brand of cereal are you using? I know  that Gerber is known to have traces of milk and soy in it. Happy Baby and Beechnut I know do not. You'll have to read the label and make sure it says Dairy and Soy Free. I have an MSPI baby also.

  • I'm using Gerber brand. I think I'll just skip the cereal all together if it really isn't necessary. If the pedi says she needs it then I'll ask about the oatmeal. The only brand baby food I can buy in my town is Gerber, it's almost an hour to the next city! One bad thing about living way out in the woods. She's loving the fruits and veggies and does great with those. Thanks for the advice!!
