Babies: 0 - 3 Months

reflux/sleep woes

LO will be 10 weeks tomorrow. He has been on reflux meds for 6 weeks and is on nutramigen formula. He will only nap on me and today he has maybe spent 3 hours awake. He goes down by 9 at night and is up about every 3 hours. Last night he woke up super upset with formula coming out of his nose. I know it can happen sometimes, but it happened again this afternoon. LO got upset and then wanted to immediately go back to sleep.
He sleeps in a rock n play, we hold him upright during/after feedings, and burp after every oz (if he will). We are feeding 4 oz bottles and he is 11lbs 8 oz.He is on 7.5 ml of prevacid 1x a day.

I just want my little guy to feel good!

Re: reflux/sleep woes

  • Sounds just like my little Jake.  He is 10 weeks.  We just found out last week that he (along with the reflux) has a milk protein allergy.  We are now on prescription formula.  He is already doing much better after 3 days.  I hope to the heavens you can avoid having to go this route, but you may want to make sure he doesn't have an allergy of some sort.  We tried 5 different formulas (yes, taking the required time for him to adapt), and lastly the Alementum (Similac's version of nutramigen) and .7 ml of Zantac twice a day.  The prevacid and zantac does not get rid or limit reflux.  It only  makes it not burn when they have reflux.  I hope your little one gets better soon.  I so know what you are going through, and it's heartbreaking.
Again, just make sure it's not an allergy exasperating the problem.  Good luck!

  • The nutramigen is an elemental formula. It should address any allergies. How big of bottles are you feeding?

  • My lo is 9 weeks and has had reflux since 4 wks old. His ped had him on enfamil ar but he was always upset. I tried similac sensative and like magic he became one happy baby and he does not need the zantac any more. So on top of the reflux he is lactose intolerant. Plus he finally started gaining weight. He has been gaining 5 oz per week.

Nutramigen is not an elemental formula.  It has broken down proteins for easier digestion due to sensitivity.  Elemental formulas are ones were they take out particular "elements" (i.e. milk proteins and/or other allergen causing elements) and put everything else back in.  Trust me, it's different.  It does NOT address allergies.  There are two elemental formulas right now that I am aware of at this time.  I'm having to buy one of them.  It's outrageous.
  • Interesting…my pedi said it was. I guess we should try something else.

  • If your LO is really sensitive to the milk protein you might have to switch to a prescription formula like Elecare or Neocate.  Nutragimen is still made from milk.
This exactly.  We are on Neocate.
  • How did you know your LO had a milk allergy?

  • Just a multitude of things.  For one, I just knew there was more to what was going on that what the Pedi could see on the surface....instincts.  Some of the things we went through were, rash (was considered baby acne at first....would come and go so Pedi wan't concerned....I finally told her it was all over like on his scalp and chest etc).  Reflux.... seemed to burp and poop forcefully.  This can be considered "normal" too.  He started getting slight mucous in his stool.  Not all the time.  Pedi said it was probably allergies.  Finally two weeks ago he had a few flecks of blood in his stool.  Freaked me out!!!  They said it was an anal fissure.  This whole time we were narrowing down the formula to the Alimentum.  We had a final visit with the Pedi, and she agreed that we had way too many formula and tummy issues.  To be on the safe side, she asked if she could refer us to a GI Specialist.  Super DR!!  He was great.  They did a scope and biopsy.  Sounds bad, but not really.  Test came back immediately positive for milk allergy.  I had taken a picture of his poop too and showed the DR.  He said immediately it was an allergy. No question.
Your baby may not have an allergy, but I wouldn't rule it out.  Go with your gut if you think it's not sitting well.

Was not meaning to come of snarky.  I was so schooled on this last week by Jake's GI Specialist. I thought the Alimentum and Neutramigen would help it too.  I was so wrong.
  • Thanks for the info…I think a GI specialist is our next step.

  • I agree you should look into milk allergies if it's coming out his nose like that.  Also, how often is he feeding?  Can you spread it out more to give him less to digest at one time?
  • We've been doing 3 hours during the day and I don't think he'll let me do any more.
I'm calling the pedi tomorrow and requesting to be put on one of the prescription formulas. If that doesn't work I'll be asking to see a GI specialist. The little guy is inconsolable tonight. It breaks my heart.

  • Jake has slept in a swing up until this week.  The swing not only cradles him, but keeps him elevated.  I'm hoping the Neocate is working, and this is why he is now taking to a crib.  2.5-3 hours is all Jake can stand too.  BUT!! The past two nights he has slept 4 to 4.5 hours before waking for a bottle.  This would NOT have happened prior to now.  I'm hoping we can work up to 5 hours sleep soon.  I still only give him 4 oz each time.  I do let him cluster feed staring at 4:00 pm. He may take up to 3 bottles before going down at 9.  Sometimes he even wants an extra 2 oz.  I try to give him at least 30 minutes in between feedings so he won't throw it up.  At night only, I have started putting 1 tsp of rice cereal in his last bottle to help with the reflux.  It does help.  This RX formula is somewhat thin.
Keep me posted on how it goes for your little one.  I hope it helps.
  • We have had a much better day. We had just tried 4 0z bottles yesterday. I am going to increase to 3,5oz  bottles only towards later feeds and see if that helps him with the reflux…poor kiddos!
