Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Anyone's Baby been sick yet?

My baby turns 5 months tomorrow. I am a stay at home mom so she doesn't go to daycare. But her cousins go to daycare and school and are always sick. I understand kids get sick and I am sure my little one will once she gets into preschool. But I got a cold after visiting my sister in law. Her daughter always has a runny nose-she's 2. My baby is not sick yet. But last night my sister's kids came over and seemed fine. They kissed my baby goodnight...now my sister says her daughter has a sore throat and headache this morning. Now I am freaking out because she kissed my baby and people are telling me strep is going around- UGH. I am such a germ freak I know but I don't want my baby to get sick. I know it is bound to happen but I want to prevent it as much as I can.

Re: Anyone's Baby been sick yet?

  • LO is just recovering from a cold/runny nose after almost 2 weeks. But yesterday she had a few coughs here and there, so I'm monitoring that now. We drop her off at the sitter's who has 2 older kids, so I'm sure that's how she got sick. Her being sick hasn't been too horrible. We've just been doing lots of saline and suctioning, and she's just been wanting more snuggles. Which I don't mind at all. Good luck!

  • I recently heard that babies can't get strep throat. I don't remember the reason but it seemed legit. My LO hasn't started daycare yet but about a month ago, she had a little cold. Saline drops and the nose frida worked wonders.

  • Not being flip but freaking out is pointless - you know that :)  She either will or won't get sick but she's already exposed so all you can do is be on the lookout for it affecting her.  If you don't already, have some infant Tylenol on hand and a rectal thermometer.  Nothing sucks more than realizing your baby is sick at 2am and having to scramble for that stuff at a 24 hour pharmacy :)

FWIW, my baby was at the ER at 10.5 weeks for a fever and cough (random virus) and has had a cough and runny nose practically ever since.  We thank daycare and big brother for that.  Once you have a second kid, it doesn't stand a chance against the older sibling's germs lol

  • My lo is 6 months and has already had a cold. She is not in daycare, but I work at a daycare. I got a cold so she got a cold. I tried to wash my hands as much as possible but she still got it. Now she has a runny nose and small cough. What worked best for the cold was to run the humidifier in her room, breastfeed frequently (if you do that) because the antibodies in bm help them recover faster and give tylenol if needed. If its strep then only antibiotics will help.

  • My LO is 4 months and got a cold around 3 months. She seems to still have some congestion now and then. We run a humidifier for her at night which seems to help. I know it stinks that they get sick but just remember its helping to build their immune systems also.

  • Not to down play your feelings but kids will get sick at some point, they may be 2mo or 2 years.  Once they do, you deal with it.  That being said, my first didn't get sick until she was 18 months old.  LO #2 got hand foot and mouth when he was 3 months curtesy of his older sister.  I just have to think that my son will have a stronger immune system soon than my daughter.
  • My 4 mo old is just getting over her 3rd cold. I'm guessing big brother (20 mo) is patient zero for all illnesses in our house lately. I stay home too but we go to lots of play areas, parks etc. It is what it is.

I'm trying to do what I can to keep myself healthy at least, so I can care for them better, and to minimize exposure to known sick people but the reality is that people are often most contagious before they are symptomatic, so you will drive yourself crazy trying to keep your kids from getting sick.

  • My first son got sick with RSV when he was an infant and ended up in the hospital for several days b/c of his breathing.  started out as a cold but got worse and you could tell he was wheezing and having difficulty breathing.  he was diagnosed with asthma and airway malacia around that time.  it was very scary and now i am very worried about how my 3.5 month old will be when he gets sick.  he currently has a cold and i am very anxious about how bad it might get.  so yeah- kids get sick but sometimes it ends up being more and it can be scary.
  • My little guy had a cold when he was 3 or 4 months. He was very sniffly and a bit fussy, but he was okay. We ran a humidifier, sucked out his snot a few times a day, and put his mattress at a slight incline. He got better with time. It wasn't a HUGE deal. Yes, you want to keep your child away from germs where you can, but he is going to get sick. It's inevitable. I wouldn't freak out about it! Practice lots of handwashing, and if you're really uncomfortable, then maybe say that you don't want other kids kissing him.

FWIW, our guy doesn't go to daycare (he's with a nanny), and he's only been sick that one time. I don't do anything to "protect" him from germs and he is fine!

  • I stay at home as well and LO has gotten sick twice already. If your little one gets sick you'll need a thermometer, nose sucker, baby saline, baby tylonol, extra feedings and lots of snuggles :) I've also heard that baby Vicks works wonders.
  • My 3mo is sick right now. He's got a runny nose and a cough. Poor little turtle... :(
