Fighting sleep

My LO is 6wks and constantly fighting sleep. I try to do everything (feed, burp, change, bath, play) and some points just can't get him settled. He will scream and cry and eventually falls asleep in my arms and refused to be put down anywhere else. Any ideas/advice how to help my lo sleep without screaming and fighting?

Re: Fighting sleep

  • I find when my LO is fighting sleep, swaddling her and giving a bottle calms her down. I may have to rock for a little bit, but the swaddle works wonders.

My LO went through a span of time where he would fight sleep, too. I read a few articles and sites and realized that his problem was that he was overtired because I wasn't getting him to sleep when he started getting sleepy.

To help keep him from getting overtired, I followed a routine of sorts that wasn't based on the clock. I always made sure the first thing I did when he woke up was eat so that he wouldn't be trying to eat when he was tired because then he wouldn't really fall asleep since he was still hungry, just to tired to stay awake long. Then I waited until I started to see signs of him getting sleepy (jerky movements, sometimes yawning and eye rubbing, more hyper active than the previous 45 minutes or so) and I'd grab him, pop my boob in his mouth (wish I could make him sleep without that!), and cover him with a blanket while he ate again and he'd drift off to sleep and take a relatively solid nap for at least 30 minutes.

I also have a rather needy baby in that he hates being set down for naps. If I bundle him up really well, I can put him in his swing without him waking up but most of the time I just have to hold him while he naps.

  • How long is your LO up? At 6 weeks, my LO could only last 45-75 minutes of awake time before getting sleepy. If I missed that window, them putting her down to sleep was a fight as she'd be overtired.
  • My one girl is this way for naps, the only thing that helps and saves my sanity is the moby wrap! It instantly calms her, I know this doesn't help for night sleep but maybe if she naps better she will do better at night? Also I remember around this time both my girls were horribly fussy, it got much better around week 8, good luck!
