Travel with breast milk

The breastfeeding board noted that someone on this board travels frequently with bm. Hoping to get some advice - in a week, we are headed to Disney for 8 nights with our girls. I EBF DD2, but also pump twice a day for stash. I plan to continue doing so while we are gone so I don't lose the 12-13 oz that I get between those 2 pumps. Question is how to handle getting that milk home. I don't want to (and don't know if I will have a spot to anyway) freeze it and risk it defrosting. My thought is that 4 or 5 days in, I will take all refrigerated milk and pack in a small cooler with ziploc bags of ice and overnight it to my mom and she will freeze it. Then the remaining days, I will pack the same way and carry home with me on the flight. Thoughts?

  • I think you might need dry ice to mail it, I doubt the ziploc ice packs will keep it cool throughout the overnight trip. Personally, I don't know if I would spend the money on sending back a few days of extra milk just to add to a stash. I've brought back lots of breast milk on airplanes, before, though. I'd recommend some of those frozen gel-pack things, they stay frozen longer.

  • Would dry ice just keep it cold or would it cause it to freeze part-way (which would be concerning if it caused partial freezing if it defrosted shortly after!)?
  • Can you give DD aome bottles during the day the first couple of days and then make sure the remainder is fresh for when you fly home.  I usually use all milk within 5 days so I would pump the same the first couple of days and then towrads the middle of the week I would feed that first pumped milk so it doesnt go to waste, pump instead of that feeding and fly home with all the rest.

  • If you want to ship breastmilk, you're going to need to ship it frozen on dry ice, which is EXPENSIVE.

Honestly, I would immediately use or dump the milk from the first 3-4 days, then bring the remaining 4-5 days with you on the flight.  I think you can bring up to 100oz.  I used a softsided cooler with multiple large ice packs and had no problem getting through security domestically (international was another issue - the security agents at Heathrow were total @ssholes)

  • Thanks girls...rubber_chicken...that was sort of my thinking at this point- just save the last 5 or 6 days. Didn't think about bottle feeding but not sure we will be in the room that much for nursing that I would be able to pump to make up for the missed session, but maybe I will bring one bottle just in case....thanks!
