Babies: 0 - 3 Months

5 week feeding schedule

I'm interested to hear others feeding schedule around this age.  My first ate every 2 hours like clockwork, all day long.  Back then I wasn't too concerned with getting my son on a schedule and I think he was just a less fussy baby.

My second is a bit trickier.  He seems to want to eat constantly but this is not a growth spurt, this has been going on for his whole life.  I breastfeed and supplement while I am working on my supply (had to take a break from BF due to infection so my supply is down).  At 2 weeks he wasn't gaining so we got in the habit of feeding him whenever he seemed remotely hungry to get his weight up.  Now he's gaining too much too fast.  For this and other reasons (my sanity and coordinating with things like picking up my eldest from school) I think it is a good time to try to get him into more of a routine/schedule for eating and sleeping.  I looked up the EASY schedule -- every 3 hours to eat.  If he eats that infrequently I'm afraid he'll start waking more at night.

Re: 5 week feeding schedule

  • I think the EASY routine is great IF you use them as guidelines and not super strict. If LO is showing signs of hunger, feed him even if it hasn't been 3 hours! That's what we are doing and also have a 5 week old. My LO eats anywhere from 2-3 hrs during the day, and 3-4 at night.

  • My son is almost 8 wks old but was a month early. In the beginning he was on a strict every 3 hr feeding. At about 4 wks old we switched to where he was eating every 2-3 hrs during the day and then when he wanted to at night which is usually every 4-5 hrs. However, during the day if he cues like he's hungry I feed him and ignore the schedule. The way I see it is the more he gets during the day the more he will sleep at night.
  • I feel for you. My DD is a grazer. Alllll day she eats an ounce at a time, falls asleep at the bottle, wakes up if I put her Down, eats an ounce, repeat. Some nights she does it too throughout the whole night, like last night. Exhausting! I'm looking for advice too. Dad is 6 weeks tomorrow. I was hoping it was a growth spurt, but she's been like this since day 1. That's why I stopped BF. I needed my sanity back.

  • LO ate every 3 hours at 5 weeks old. We're on a loose EASY schedule.
