I think dinner is supposed to be your main big meal. So if you have that at midday or in the evening, that is supposed to be your dinner. I think supper is supposed to be the smaller evening meal if you eat dinner earlier in the day. Lunch is your meal if you have dinner in the evening.
Ding ding ding!
BUT, I still say supper in the evening, even though that's usually our biggest meal. I mostly do it to bug MH because he calls it dinner. :P
I call the evening meal "dinner" but growing up I always called it supper. I grew up on a farm and it seems like more people that I knew growing up called it supper....maybe a more rural thing. Now, I like in a medium size community and everyone calls it dinner.
I do think there's a regional component. I'm very familiar with "supper" and wouldn't think it strange if someone used that term. It's just not what usually comes out of my mouth.
And churches hold pancake suppers. Not pancake dinners.
In my part of Scotland your lunchtime meal is either dinner or lunch, evening meal is dinner or tea, and supper is only every the little snack before you go to bed (which is not something every family would do).
